GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN

"My Art is not an answer, - it is a question."

Gottfried Helnwein is an Austrian expressionist artist (currently holding Irish Citizenship), adept in most fields, his talents including, but not not excluded to, photography, painting, full scale instalments utilising multimedia, and sculpture. He has studied and worked as a professional career artist his entire life, recurring themes of his work have focused on the manipulation and societal position of children, National identity (in specific that of Germany) and violence in entertainment. A perfect partner then, it would seem, for a collaboration with Marilyn Manson.

"Gottfried Helnwein is my mentor - on any artistic thing I've done. His fight for expression and stance against oppression are reasons why I chose him as an artistic partner. An artist that doesn't provoke will be invisible. Art that doesn't cause strong emotions has no meaning. Helnwein has that internalized."
Marilyn Manson

During the period 2002-3, the pair worked together visually to create and evoke the atmosphere of The Golden Age Of Grotesque, its accompanying film Doppelherz, and elements of the worldwide Grotesk Burlesk tour (not only restricted to musical performances). Manson has described his as "mentor", and it is clear that there was a strong and respectful understanding between the two men during this period. Many of the works and imagery that were created during this time were notable compositions of continued Helnwein visual thematics, appropriated and reimagined as part of the Manson thematic for the album and era. It could be suggested by that token, that Helnwein was "creating" part of Manson's evolution, using Manson as a canvas of sorts, which is echoed on the record as Manson claims "I'm not an artist I'm a fucking work of art".

Helnwein later opened his home (The Irish Castle Gurteen de La Poer) in December of 2005 as the venue for Marilyn Manson's wedding ceremony to Dita Von Teese, the photographed sessions from which were later featured in the March 2006 edition of Vogue magazine.

It is unlikely the pair will collaborate again in the future, as the mood, imagery and thematic of The Golden Age Of Grotesque seemed to be that best suited to Helnwein's choreography, but he is still considered inspiration and mentor to Manson.

Helnwein continues to create and promote his work to international audiences, his portfolio and vast collection of work can be viewed in part at his official website:-
