View Full Version : Portraits by Procrastinator

At first I felt a little uneasy posting my work here, considering the fact that I'm not nearly as talented as the artists who are members here. I don't even call myself an artist, as I'm self-taught and lack a lot of the relevant knowledge, skills and techniques. But I do wish to develop as far as possible, because I like to think that drawing and painting will not be just a hobby to me in the future.

Take a look at the few pieces I'm not embarrassed to show and please let me know what you think. Criticism is more than welcome, be it the "You suck!" kind, because I want to get as more sincere responses as possible.

As a side note, I also accept requests. If you'd like me to do a portrait of you, just ask via PM or directly here in this thread! I'm cheap. Joking, I'll do it for free.

Alright, enough murmuring, here is some of my work:

Sopa De Conejo (Pencil): I'm not sure if he's still happy with it but I'm putting it here anyway.

Oh my gosh, these are so awesome. And wow that last one is amazing! I really like the stippling (it's addicting, isn't it?!) and how it stands out from the simplicity of the rest of it. Keep it up. :)

you have some very good pieces in here. you have a significant amount of talent.

i did a drawing just like the first one once, except i used a ballpoint pen. its the only life drawing that ive done and actually liked.

anyways, keep up the great work.

Kidding. Good to see you around here, man, and thanks for the kind words.

I really like the stippling (it's addicting, isn't it?!)

Ugh, I dunno. My hands are usually shaking...

No, seriously, I've never thought about it before. But my teecher sure tries to teach me out of it. Thanks for the comment though, I'm glad my work is enjoyed.

I currently am working on another portrait, this time by request, not out of perversion.

I'm disappointed entirely.

I must admit, you're doing that shitty little photograph a lot more justice than it deserves, this image looks to be an interesting work.

Procrastinator why the hell were you uneasy about posting these!? Your new one is looking really great I'm excited to see how it turns out, genuinly I'm excited about it as if it's one of my own that I'm doing, that's how excited I am lol ehh I'm such a freak :(

07-24-2009, 09:45 AM
Procrastinator, these really are fantastic!! And your new one, wow, you should never be afraid of posting stuff, even unfinished! I cannot wait to see the finished product!

Procrastinator
07-25-2009, 05:43 AM
Alright, the piece is already finished. It was ready yesterday but I couldn't be arsed to scan and post because I got too drunk after I painted it. Besides, I still didn't have a title for it.

Here is more work in progress first:

Day Three:

http://i25.tinypic.com/2vjvjmc.jpg

^ This one is a bit blurry, so sorry. I didn't realize it when I took the photo, and it's the only one I took at this stage.

Aaand, here is the final piece:

http://i38.tinypic.com/dc3jud.jpg

Still Dashing!

Hope you guys enjoy. I've never used so many colours in one piece (AND THERE'S A REASON FOR IT!), and am a bit uncofident about how this portrait turned out, so I'd really appreciate some genuine responses. I'm rather happy with it though.

Comments appreciated more than ever. :)

Can I paint you? You may end up looking a bit erm "different" ;)
Or I might make a model of your face as I was going to do one anyway with neon lights inside the mouth and glass teeth and a disco ball like tongue :D

I've got a couple more pieces planned, so keep checking on this thread if you're interested.

07-25-2009, 01:16 PM
Can I paint you?

By all means, though that would make you the fourth member here (that I know of...) who has decided to immortalise me, I might start developing a complex, like I have a growth on my face or something.

the unforgiven
07-26-2009, 12:50 AM
What EVER happened to the portrait of me you promissed to draw, Steve!

heh. which old member were you? because i started on a bunch of the old members portraits, but then when the phant shut down i kinda stopped. i still have them all, so im fully capable of finishing any of them if you simply remind me where to start from. lol.

sorry if i kinda left you hanging on that one. ill finish it as soon as i can though if you want me to.

EDIT: you wouldnt happen to be Racing Rat would you?

Procrastinator
07-26-2009, 03:38 AM
^ Yes, I was Racing_Rat. But it's cool man, I never obliged you to draw me, I was just joking. But it would be nice if you did a portrait of me, I like your work. Although I'm sure you have other, more important stuff to do.

the unforgiven
07-27-2009, 01:56 PM
i started yours, and got rather far on it. ill post a scan of it later. hell, i might as well make another art thread in here even though i havent had a chance to make much art lately.

anywho, im almost done with your portrait. all i have left is some shading on your shirt and the shadows on your face arent quite dark enough and i need to add a little more detail to your hair, but after that, its all done. but knowing the way i work, that could take months to finish. lol.

EDIT: i have it in my new art thread. check that shit out.

How come I haven't posted here?

What I really like: Headaches and Ignominy, Sid Vicious, Boredom, Sir Dashing (of course), Sei A, Marc Bolan.

You sure have many talents! I wish I could do something like this, but I have to resign myself with what I have.

We're waiting for more.

I know, right? At first I wasn't confident about it, but now am quite happy with it. Though it needs a little editing... which I will do as soon as I can and post the edited version. (No, S.D., don't try to discourage me again!)

And thank you everyone for your kind words! You all make me smile, which I haven't done much in a while, so it means a lot.

Also, I don't know when I will be able to draw or paint again, so I hope you understand and are in no rush to become one of my victims.

Right. Apologies to those of you who have requested portraits and expected to see your faces in the next image I post here, I'll get around to it these days.

For now, here is my latest piece, a man who brought inspiration back to me:

crippled_plaything, I am terribly sorry for the ridiculously long delay, given that I also had enough time to surprise you with a portrait on your birthday, and I don't even have an excuse... Well, maybe just this:

I could've sworn I replied to this thread before. Oh well.
Your tempera work is the best. Case in point, the portraits of S.D, Sei A, Scroobius Pip (!) and Marc Bolan (my favourite, that one is just infuckingsane). I love your watercolours also, specially the ones of crippled plaything and S.D, those ones are fantastic.

Thank you for stopping by, Emma. The similarity between our painting styles is no coincidence. Once I saw your paintings about a year ago, I loved them so much that I decided to "steal" your style, and as I recall, you said you wouldn't kill me for doing so. I've seen other people do it as well, and it's amazing how each of them kind of "personalizes" it, but the simplicity and impact remain! Love it!

I'm glad I stopped by. I wish I had more time to view the art here because we are lucky to have many great articles.

I apologise I have a memory like a seive - so I forget things - age I guess (lol). But I am humbled that your saw something of mine and were inspired. I can't even begin to tell you how much that means to have someone say that.

And I agree, it is such a simple way or painting portait but simple is sometimes the best for impact - the starkness beings so much emotion from it in my opinion. And your paintings have a lot of depth and I love the way you stylised them using the stiple.

I also love the new painting - again very beautiful.

Jack (Pencil)

It's been a while since I last did a classic pencil drawing, three months if I remember correctly. I'm sorry if Method Man expected a painting, but I missed doing pencil work and have other reasons for choosing this media. And I assure you, it doesn't take less time or effort than most of my paintings. Hope you enjoy.

Apologies for the scratches on the paper, I didn't notice they were there when I started drawing and the work I had done was too much to leave and start all over again...

You're welcome, Jack! I'm glad you liked it. :)

The images I'm about to post clearly aren't portraits, but I'll keep them in here for now as I'm still unsure how far the little experiments I've been doing will go, and if they develop as much as I'd like to, I'll change the title of this thread because I insist on it being relevant to its content. :P

This is Mootsie, I'm more happier with her than with the fag above:

Apologies I couldn't provide scans, but these were rather unplanned with unknown results, so I didn't cut the paper to the size that would fit in my scanner. Also, I've never drawn cartoon characters before, nor has anyone taught me how to do that, so sorry if it might look a bit unprofessional to some of you. I personally was nicely surprised of the final results and thought I'd share. It's been great fun drawing these and I'll make sure to keep doing so and see how it goes, I might even take cartoon-ish portrait requests too if anyone is interested.

Sorry for the long muttering and thanks for looking! :)

I re-read the first post of this thread and laughed when you said:

At first I felt a little uneasy posting my work here, considering the fact that I'm not nearly as talented as the artists who are members here.

That's a lie.

You're one of the most talented artists I've seen in recent memory, on here, the old Heirophant and anywhere else for that matter. :)

I love your portraits, even may fancy myself getting one...

just saying. ;)

Keep up the amazing work.

Wow, Procrastinator, you're so talented! It was so awesome to see the different WIP photos. My drawing skills are not present, so I enjoyed seeing how you were building up a piece. I must say "Still Dashing" is my favorite, in no small part due to the intermediary photos.

Just wow... It's really heartwarming (I'm a woman, lol) to see all this talent on this forum. (Speaking about everyone, of course. There wouldn't be enough posts to do justice all of the great talents around here)

This is possibly the most delayed post I've ever made (haven't been on forums in forever), but P, your art is excellent, and the painting you did of me is really excellent - it takes some real talent to make me look decent! It's on my wall in my flat :) Thanks again.

Well, after nearly a year off of drawing and painting, I finally managed to do some work in the last days of this past month. Here is what I felt like sharing:

http://i52.tinypic.com/2mm7if7.jpg

One rather unsuccessful drawing of Dita Von Teese. I know it's not great, but it's something- a start. Hope you enjoy and keep an eye on this thread as I have a few other things planned. Let's just hope my plans won't get ruined by shitty circumstances again...

It's fantastic to see you creating again! :) I'm hoping as well that you won't have to be forced to stop anymore.

As for your work, I think it's a really good start. As I can see, you were going for a caricature, so it's a bit difficult for me to tell what was intended and what wasn't. The only suggestion I can give you is that the head is a little too small compared to the body, especially the shoulders. Other than that, it's damn fine in my opinion! :)

Anyway, I love your "caricaturized" style. My favorite piece in that style is definitely the portrait of S.D. and Mary, where you brilliantly exaggerated their facial features.
Looking forward to seeing more works from you!

Well, I'd have sex with Dita in that picture. I'm no lesbian, but my first thought was that you captured her breasts perfectly. I love her exaggeratedly skinny legs. And hair. And yeah.

<3 Moar.

(I also enjoy your other work, but I'm far too late for the comments on everything. :( )

Thank you ladies!

rrodmila, I cannot tell you how much I would like to have sex with Dita in general! She is also a big inspiration to me, not just a person I am attracted to. The reason I chose this particular picture was because I was feeling a bit kinky, so I put heels and lipstick on and drew her. (yes, I sometimes dress up before I start drawing or painting, don't ask me why)

Alexandra, I don't know what was intended or not either, lol! When I draw in this style, I don't usually pay attention to proportions unless I deliberately want to make a particular body part or feature smaller or bigger than it's supposed to be. Also, I have never been taught how to draw the human body (although I am familiar with a few very basic rules), and it shows! Sometimes I'm embarrassed about it and would like to eventually take some lessons or whatever but I'm unable to. Thank you for stopping by and giving me feedback! :)

Right. I hadn't done any painting in one year, so please spare me:

http://i53.tinypic.com/2nsbajb.jpg

This is a painting of my boyfriend David and myself. For several reasons, I went completely bonkers over it when I was still sketching it out. After I applied the white paint, I got scared, rolled on the floor, cried and started considering to just leave it but couldn't decide, then texted David to tell him how I felt (I didn't tell him I what I was painting) because he is an artist too and I knew he would understand. Thanks to his encouragement, the piece is now finished. I'm not entirely happy with it, but I'm happy that I did it and now would like to know what any of you thinks of it. Please! *sad puppy eyes*

P.S.: I don't have access to a scanner anymore, so this photo is all you get for now, whether it does the painting justice or not- I don't know...

No, I won't ask but, man, I sure will try that out the next time I'll decide to paint!

Ah, okay then. :)
I like it when others are or I myself am able to paint a piece of work without "planning" too much because, and this goes just for me since I don't know how others feel about this, the more I keep doing that, the lower the chances are it's going to turn out good and make me feel satisfied with it. Some of my best pieces were the result of painting/sketching on the whim, without having any "plan" for it beforehand.

Also, I have never been taught how to draw the human body (although I am familiar with a few very basic rules), and it shows! Sometimes I'm embarrassed about it and would like to eventually take some lessons or whatever but I'm unable to. Thank you for stopping by and giving me feedback! :)

It shows? Please, I assure you that your most recent work proves you wrong! ;) Don't be embarrassed as there isn't any reason to be.

And the painting is purely fantastic. The amount of detail you put into your paintings in this particular style is mind-blowing to me. I find it too difficult to paint with such detail. Sure, I can kill my wrist while sketching whenever I get carried away with details but not when painting.
Anyway, I especially like what a difficult photo you chose to paint. Although, I'm not sure if that painting is based on a photo, so please correct me if I'm wrong. The perspective was quite easy to mess up, since faces from such angles like the one here are very, very challenging to paint and kudos to you for succeeding at it.

Sorry to hear painting this one turned out to be almost too overwhelming to do and thank you for sharing the story behind it, I always appreciate it when the artist shares his/her comments about a piece. And really, this is a fantastic work and considering you haven't been painting in one year and was about to give up makes it even more astounding. So, keep 'em coming!

Thank you, ladies!

The piece I am about to post now, also has a lot to do with my personal life. However, the inspiration behind it is quite the opposite of my previous painting, which I would very much like to delete, but didn't want to make the posts after my last one seem like a bunch of nonsense.

I'll call this one 'Love', because this is what love looks like to me right now:

I used a photograph for reference, but it was not of someone I know- just took a headshot of a random smiling happy person off the Internet. Painted entirely in watered down drawing ink. Not entirely sure what I think of it. For someone who hasn't produced any visual work for around eight months, it's at least something and helps to express my pain without taking from anyone else's time except mine. Comments appreciated. If you think it sucks, forget your good manners and let me know - I won't get upset.

I find the way you captured the utter ugliness that love sometimes morphs into absolutely spot-on. My favorite part are the eyes and the shading, so if anything, I'd say that maybe a little shadowing around the nose and the nasolabial creases. But the overall effect is creepy and so (as I'm guessing that it was your intent) it's a fine piece of work right there.

Thank you, Alexandra! If I'm perfectly honest, I didn't really put much into that piece because I was only seeking some sort of relief... The uglyness and crudeness of it are all deliberate, as is the overall unrealistic appearance.

I felt like painting yesterday, and not leaving anything unfinished today, so here is my last painting:

This is a painting I did a while ago, by request of fellow forum member Joker. Surprisingly enough, he liked it and soon it will become his property. :) Many thanks for his support! Here it is:

Heart-Shaped Asses (watercolour & gouache)

And this is a charicature of Manson I just finished. I wanted to see how a crooked image would look like if its shading was as realistic as possible. So far so good...

My next piece is a tribute to Glaswegian Artist, Architect and Designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Because words can't even begin to describe how much his work inspires me.
