I don't really know what to say, they aren't good and seem like the creations of a 13 year old who has just discovered Marilyn Manson and Photoshop filter effects.
However I also don't like watching a dude becoming more sporadic over the internet.
Maybe you should check your meds or think harder before making a post.
Sorry that I'm being a dick.

I have limited resources, but any ardent artist will use any tool available to create something.
Yes! I love what you wrote there and completely agree with you. And even though I personally might not be an example proving your point, I think that's what truly defines one as an artist.
But then, "artist" is such a broad term that I could go on and on trying to figure out what exactly stands for it...
Edit: Oy, not that I consider myself an artist! I just wanted to make it clear... *awkwardly walks away*
This is the first in a series of paintings/drawings of people that I know from here, and various other places. I have others but will need to wait to post them til over the weekend. If you like it, I'd love to hear what you think, or interpret from it. If it sucks, don't relent, or if you have any suggestions they'd be appreciated. This was the first real painting, even though I mixed paints, and used felt tip as well, in about 11 years. So, hopefully they'll only get better.

I really like it, I like the block-colours and the black outlines. I love the colours of the building in the right corner and how you have merged it with the sky. Looking forward to seeing more work. :)

Overall, it is a bit blocky, but evertime I look at this picture, I get this overwhelming sense of potential. As I said on Facebook, the likeness is definitely there, and you also have a good sense of composition (both these things are among the most difficult blocks for the emerging artist). Sure, your depiction of the human form could use some brushing up, but it's definitely there.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how you progress with your paintings, I have a feeling that you're going to develop very quickly. :)

I couldn't agree more with what ShelfLife already wrote, specifically the part about composition. And as for a first work in over a decade, it's good and I mean it. I also like the "blockiness" of it, so maybe you could try polishing that a bit more and make it your own, distinctive style?
What I personally appreciate more in visual arts is having your signature style rather than simply being able to paint or sketch realistically. That's something I'm struggling with to this day because while I can paint quite realistically (though that's arguable because some time ago when I was painting a portrait, my mother, who came into my room, asked "Who's that?" while the painting subject was sitting right in front of her, haha), I'm still trying to find my style.
Anyway, sorry for the digression. I'd love to see more of your works. :)
When I get back from work, I'll discuss it a bit more in detail. Though I do appreciate the compliments, and the suggestions. As for Hex.Arq, I did mention that I mixed up the substances for this particular peice. I used water color, acrylic, and for some parts I did use felt tip pens, as well as a ball point pen for some of the finer details.

I'd like to get back into painting again. But I almost feel like I can't, or I'm not sure what to paint.

I had that same thought, but decided to just go for it. I've been trying not to force things. So, if I could suggest anything to you, it would be to just start something, just anything, but make sure you finish it. That's crucial. Just don't force it. Do it to relax, or for fun. Even if it isn't "perfect", at least you can say that you enjoyed creating something that you usually wouldn't, or haven't for a long time.

It's an interesting effect; it's almost identical to an all-marker piece, at least from this picture.

It originally started out like that. However, I wanted to add other textures to it. I just finished up something tonight that isn't a portrait that has the same effects. I have some others that I want to upload soon that are just drawings. Thanks for the input and the keen observation. :)
Once again, thank you again for creating this lovely painting for me Derek.
I think you captured the movement and positioning very well, I'll post the photo that Derek was originally referencing from to show this:

I also really liked the appropriation of the brick wall, the red arm reaching out to me, and the burning building in the background. I'd love for you to further explain this symbolism to me sometime. It was also nice to see the close attention paid to the detail of the different layers of clothing, despite it being mostly black and hard to tell because of the photo's high contrast.
Yes, this isn't the smoothest, most realistic painting, it's quite jagged and blocky, but I think you should embrace that style! It would be interesting to see you develop this technique.
Looking forward to seeing your work progress. :)

I like your drawing style :)
Is that something burning in the background? looks really nice.
I'd love for you to further explain this symbolism to me sometime.
I remember talking to you, and saying that it would be a real challange to draw you because you're very photogenic, and accessorised. So, I decided to do something conceptual , and abstract with it instead of a portrait, even though it didn't start out that way. In this particular piece I wanted to illustrate you as being the only real defined part of it. I focused on making you as real as I could. At the same time I wanted to depict the world around you as vapid, and smouldering. I was actually thinking about a parable from The Bible, "Lot", where he and his wife flee from Sodom as it is being destroyed. I envisioned you in this dysphoric, filthy world, populated by perverts, and pestilence, yet you remain pristine and unscathed casually strolling away from the world that you exist in without looking back, adorned under a coat and sheilded by an umbrella that act almost as a aegis protecting you.
Other than that, I am working on one, more Manson related at the moment. So, hopefully on Monday I'll have a few more things to put up.

I really, really like this.
It has a colorful mixtures of colors. It looks like it took much more effort than the other two. Keep going for this type of art. :)

Thank you. I have about 5 more that I've recently finished. Two of which I decided to revamp and improve a bit. I am just waiting to get somewhere where I can get them up without a cell phone camera or a webcam.
That painting actually only took about 2 hours. I may decide to do a couple more tonight. I've been trying to take a break for a day or two so I don't get burnt out and exhaust any creativity, or just do something lackluster that I really am not in the mindset to create.
Nice to see you continuing with the work Shangs. :)
I like the burning effect of 'We're all Happy to Live in America', but if I were you I would've slightly burnt into the flag, showing more 'decay' in both the artwork and symbolism.
I also like the diverse colours you've used in your watercolour painting. Each individual colour is so bright and vivid, but the way you've combined them together makes the bottom half of the painting look like a rainbow that's rotting and melting away, it's quite effective.

Thank you, Mary. I did end up doing a bit more work on "We're all Happy to Live on America" as far as burning the banner a bit more, and I also added something else to it, so I'll post it sometime soon.
With the Manson painting, you hit the nail on the head. It was a rainbow on fire, falling "into the void", just like the glass balloon. When I do paintings, other than traditional drawings, I like to make things smudgey.

Wow, Shangs, these are looking good. I love your use of colour, both the subtle merging of colours in some areas and the richness in Mellifluity and Contagion.
The ghostliness of the tree in Ceme-Tree is beautiful, I love how the branches look as if they could be hands reaching out from the body of the tree.
I also really like the tonality and shadows in your portrait of Michael Myers.

Not gonna lie, I'm not a massive fan of your art, but it's by no means crap - just not my thing.
The exception being Mellifluity and Contagion - really is awesome.
Keep up the good work :)
Rev Manz - We've discussed this on Messenger, but I'd just like to thank you again for your kind words.
Dysmorphia - Thanks for taking the time to check all of these out, your lovely comments, and for your support. I'm glad that you like them. :)
Joker - That's cool. I'm not really looking for "fans" though. Writing has always been my prowess, so I am just exploring painting, and drawing again as I explained earlier in the thread. But I'd like to thank you as well for at least commenting, and for enjoying "Mellifluity and Contagion".
All of you guys are great. Especially the ones who who are respectful enough not to comment and tell me that I suck. j/k lol
I enjoyed your new additions Derek, 'Mellifluity and Contagion' in particular, it's a very interesting piece.
Mary - Again, thanks. I am working on some more, this time more metticulously. I've also found some old drawings that I did, some even dating way back that I may either just scan and post or redo. In the meantime I have 4 more "portraits" that I plan on throwing on here sometime. I'm doing "The Empirical Guy and Dysmorphia", I have an old picture that I drew in August '09 of "Peaches" that I am going to put up, and I am messing around with a self "portrait". I've been really busy, and not in a hurry to get anything posted at the moment.

Too bad I was away at the time you posted the most recent works, so once again my apologies that I haven't left a comment this time. But better late than never. :) As soon as I saw Mellifluity and Contagion I knew it was my favorite work of yours so far. The idea is very unique and quite dear to me as scorpions, especially one particular Scorpio, mean a lot to me. Also, Lines of Ceme-Tree is an interesting piece. I like how you blended the colors as well as the contrast between the grayish colors of the tree and grass with the bright and vivid colors of the setting sun.
Thanks for the kind words, Alexandra. I haven't been as productive as I was starting to become last year. I've had some set backs and the such. However, I am working on some things. I'm just not putting them up yet. I think that I was a little too hasty in my last efforts at doing something "artistic", so I am just taking my time now. Though I can say that even though I still paint and draw, my focus has shifted to music for the time being, so I'll also have some of that to throw out there as well.

Nice, you've clearly made a lot of progress since your last post here. Is the painting inspired by Eta Carinae, or just the title?
Also, it'd be nice to have your work scanned or photographed with a better camera so that we can see it more clearly 8-).

Thanks! And I have a few more I'll put up tonight. As I was explaining elsewhere on the interwebz, it's not just a name I thought was cool. I am, and always have been interested with stellar systems. I've written about them in semi-fictional networking biographies or journal entries etc about being a hybrid alien. It's also about my interest in the paradox of double stars such as the "morning star" from the Bible and the such. The interesting thing about Eta Carina is that it is a binary star that changes brightness with massive luminosity that disperses shock waves with awesome intensity. The painting was representative of an awakening. I used the LVB color variation on the portrait side of me, and the other half is an alien skull. That just go's back to the whole alien hybrid allusions to myself that I like to make.
