I just read this and thought some of the more ardent Doctor Who fans might want to be made aware of this news:

British actress Elisabeth Sladen, who starred in the popular "Doctor Who" sci-fi series and the spin-off show "The Sarah Jane Adventures," has died aged 63, the BBC said on Tuesday.

According to the broadcaster, Sladen appeared as Doctor Who assistant Sarah Jane Smith in the BBC television series between 1973 and 1976 opposite Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.

More recently the actress appeared in four series of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" on children's channel CBBC.

Sladen had been battling cancer for some time.

"It is with much sadness that we can announce Elisabeth Sladen, the much-loved actress ..., passed away this morning," a BBC spokesman said.

CBBC controller Damian Kavanagh added that he was "deeply saddened and shocked by the news of Lis's untimely death.

"Lis brought joy, excitement and a sense of wonder to her many fans in her role as Sarah Jane Smith. She was adored by our young audience and I know all of them will miss her as much as I will," he said.

Sladen leaves actor husband Brian Miller and daughter Sadie.

I have fond memories of her as she was companion to my favourite Doctor - Jon Pertwee.

Yeah I heard that this morning on the radio. I wasn't aware she was ill, but then showbiz news is not something I actively read. Very sad to hear. I liked her re-emergence over the past couple of years.

I also caught up with an older story from The Sarah Jane Adventures...
Four days ago, that's all it was, and now she is gone. I was told about this last night, and it's absolutely miserable, I wept. My father met Elisabeth Sladen a few times, and said she was lovely, friendly, beautiful, everything you would imagine.
Sladen is part of Doctor Who mythology as Sarah Jane Smith, and a huge part of many people's childhoods. I can't believe me and my mum were just discussing the new Planet Of The Spiders DVD yesterday afternoon, I come back from a drink with friends and this is the first thing I am told about, and so soon after dear old Nicholas Courtney's passing.

My thoughts are with her friends and family, and despite it being a small gesture, I will celebrate her life and contribution to entertainment today with some stories, perhaps Revenge Of The Cybermen or The Sontaran Experiment. This is a sad day though, rest in peace fair lady.
