View Full Version : Is Chris Vrenna the new Manson drummer?

I read an article online off the NME website, where it talks about the small clip of the new Manson material that was found on his website and it mentions at one of the paragraphs below that Chris Vrenna is replacing Ginger Fish. Although, I guess it makes us wonder on who will be playing keyboards when Manson goes on tour or will Manson perform without a keyboard player?
Read the article here:

Not Mechanical was discussing this article with me yesterday, and I'd be inclined to say at this stage that it's a case of journalistic speculation on their part (especially concerning the album title).
Sure, seeing Chris on the drums would be great, and it's a natural assumption to make given that he plays the drums and has taken over from Ginger before, but with no word from Manson himself or the band, it's not confirmed and therefore still up for debate.
It's still possible that a different drummer will be brought in, and that Chris will continue as keyboardist for the upcoming tour, especially as Ginger's decision to leave the band seems to have been quite swift, and was based on him not being able to confirm his availability. I imagine all drum tracks were Vrenna's responsibility in the studio, but that's not to say he'll be in the same role live.
I'll edit the topic title also, just to reflect the speculative element. I also think this photo is the fucking business:-

Based comments Manson's made on facebook, and Fred's comments in our inteview - seems to indicate he is the band's drummer.
You've got a point, I was thinking mostly from a tour perspective only, but outside of creative input from all members, it's without question that Vrenna was the drummer for this new album. I guess regards touring duties we'll just have to wait and see, but I'd actually prefer to see Chris tearing the skins live, and someone new undertaking keys.

According to Manzin, after asking Vrenna at the recent DJ show in Philadelphia, he is the band's drummer.

^ At Dracula's Ball, which was about a month ago. It would be the most logic move.

^Exactly. Why put a great drummer, who's already in the band, to waste? I'm excited to see/hear what he has in store for us.

Been thinking about this the past couple of days.
Everyone knows it remains my opinion that Ginger is the better drummer for Manson. The AAG videos I've seen, Vrenna just isn't doing the songs justice. That may have been because he was a last minute add-in and wasn't 100% up to speed, so I'll wait until I see him again to make a final judgement. He's probably a better man for the job than anyone else available at the moment that I can think of.
However, if he's gone, who's on keys? It's been repeatedly mentioned they can just have a backing track, but I don't think that's the answer. It would take something away from the live experience having 1 less band member on stage. Vrenna has got in to that role over the past couple of years, and I find it hard to think of anyone to replace him there, so it's an odd situation on where to have him.
I was also thinking about how this will affect future music from the band. Ginger's style has become very ingrained in the music over the past 15 years. As I've mentioned before, even though Vrenna played it all on THEOL, some of the actual writing of the parts has elements I recognise as part of Ginger's style. I had assumed this was due to him being present for early writing on the songs (probably during the ROTW tour) if not the actual recording, but I've been wondering if his influence will continue to live on in some way? Manson has a lot of creative control, how much is him saying "I want a beat like this", or "play it more like that"? There are things that have become part of the band's sound. Will certain elements stick around, or are we in for a distinct change in sound, drum-wise?

Can Manson play keys?

Well, he mentioned that he actually played much of GOAG in Pogo's absence, and IIRC he played the harpsichord on The Nobodies as well.

I'm sure he could manage playing a few prerecorded synths, no? I don't see why they can't do a Tool-type set up with the other musicians having pedals, etc. for additional synths. But then again, I'm just an observer, I really know nothing about the technical aspects lol.
Im think they'll go ahead as a four piece

And while I'm sure there will be some synths/scapes - if the band is writing as a four piece, I doubt the synth side of things will be as forward as say Mechanical Animals (unless they do a track that is specific synth, ala Wow). Of course they aren't the same type of band, but the only thing I can compare it to is the NIN 4-piece setup. The synth things that were "live" were covered by someone, but the majority of backing synth drums, loops etc - were just backing track. In a way I think the fewer band members makes the stage more interesting and gives more room to be creative in presentation.

^aha.
Anyway, I heard a rumor that the ghost of Wesley Willis contributed some dope beats courtesy of his Fisher Price drum machine/keyboard.

I'm interested to see what Vrenna brings to the table. He did a damn good job on the AAG tour for only having a short amount of time to get comfortable with the setlist. Besides, the man has always been a scarily good drummer:

I believe it's been confirmed that Chris Vrenna will be replacing Ginger Fish on the drums. I read about the lineup on Mansonwiki.com for the next tour, which are: vocals: Marilyn Manson, guitar: Twiggy , bass: Fred Sablan , Keyboards: unknown and Drums: Chris Vrenna. Although, I guess that means Manson will need a new keyboard player before the next tour starts. The link is below if you want to check.

With all due respect to MansonWiki that line up is based on speculation that any number of us have done based on the current band dynamics.
Although Manson's Facebook confirms said members are in band as referenced by MansonWiki, no one, has yet confirmed roles. Until Manson clearly states Vrenna will be playing drums OR keyboards, to which he is perfectly capable of doing both, the rest at the moment is supposition.

As well as what Emma has just said, it should be pointed out that any one of us is free to go and edit that page at will, just as has been done in this case ;)

Trent Reznor. He is the new drummer of Marilyn Manson.
It's going to happen. Watch it

I heard from sources that Manson has recruited Trent Reznor in the band, as a flutist. Jesus was also approached, but he's currently busy playing Ukulele for Die Antwoord.

Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, Vrenna has stated to Manzin that he WILL be on drums. Coincide this with the tidbit of info given by Fred in the interview conducted here on P.M. and it only makes sense that Vrenna is the new drummer. That's enough confirmation for me.

Not to mention MM commented that Vrenna has been the drummer for a year now. Chris IS the drummer of MM. Case closed :P

Yeah, but I think he'll be busy with his own stuff for a while. Danny seems to have plenty of spare time (since he's not working on new Puscifer ;_;). Which reminds me, I hope Maynard and his crew know what they're doing. I feel Lohner added a lot to that group.

I thought we had a thread somewhere about the lack of keyboardist in MM right now, but I can't find it so this thread might be the best to slip this into.
Chris Vrenna was interviewed recently and he comments on the status of drums/keyboard when he was still in MM, saying it would have still probably been the 4 of them without a keyboardist.
Would there still have been a keyboardist in Marilyn Manson had you not left?
CV: Actually, probably not. After Ginger left it was obvious I was gonna go back to drums and we probably weren’t going to have a keyboard player. It was just going to be a quartet, which is good because it’s more compact and helped with financial considerations. Plus, we all know that there are samples being triggered. Pogo [Madonna Wayne Gacy] was crazy. Watching him was fun.
Full interview here, one or two MM bits but it's not really news. http://coma-online.com/?p=20818

Sorry to spoil 5% of the interview, but check this:
We worked 7 a.m. till next sunrise five or six days a week and it was just exhausting being on that schedule. I missed doing other things. After two records, it just seemed like the right time to leave.
New picture of Chris Vrenna leaving the studio, circa 2011:

''We only did 20 seconds of Flowers of evil this week'' said Vrenna, while drowning in his own tears.
But seriously, wtf. It's just for an amount of time. Thank god he left if he was doing it like an obligation or something.
