As a humongous Evil Dead fan, I'm not really sure how I feel about this... I've been waiting for a new Evil Dead for a very long time, and I'm not really sure how to feel at the thought of my favorite movie series falling to the Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street type of situation where there's a remake that doesn't really capture the same feeling as the original.

Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell (who also starred in the original franchise) are gearing up to remake their cult sensation THE EVIL DEAD through their long standing Ghost House Pictures partnership. Raimi and Tapert were such instant fans of Fede Alvarez’s short film “Panic Attack” that they set up a blind deal with the filmmaker and through that process have attached Fede Alvarez to write and direct the film. Alvarez wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. Academy Award® winning screenwriter Diablo Cody is currently doing revisions on the draft. Ghost House is committed to renewing the franchise and has the film on the fast track.

Raimi, Tapert and Campbell will serve as producers. Ghost House Pictures partners Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane will executive produce. Nicole Brown and J.R. Young will oversee the project for Ghost House. Lionsgate will handle international sales on the film.

The three producing partners commented, "We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the ‘Evil Dead’ series. We can't wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us thirty years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film’s original elements."

Raimi wrote, directed and, along with Tapert and Campbell, produced the original horror classic THE EVIL DEAD that tells the story of five twenty-something friends who become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead. An archaeologist's tape recording reveals that the ancient text was discovered among the Khandarian ruins of a Sumerian civilization. Playing the taped incantations, the youths unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival. THE EVIL DEAD spawned a franchise with the equally successful installments EVIL DEAD II and ARMY OF DARKNESS.

Fede Alvarez is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content and attorney Karl Austen. Diablo Cody is represented by Sarah Self at WME, Mason Novick, and attorney Jeff Frankel of McKuin Frankel Whitehead LLP.

Yeah, but it seems like they're attacking the classics here lately and shredding them to pieces. Like Emma said, why can't they just come up with a new idea? We're in desperate need of originality these days when it comes to horror flicks... or ANYTHING entertaining for that matter! It's like we're in the age of "The Remake" and it's all shit they're trying to make better with new technology when in all actuality, it's worse, alot worse.
It's like everyone in the entertainment business has 'copycat syndrome'. But I mean not everything that is inspired by something else is always bad, but that's just the thing. There's a difference between inspiration and steeling, and that's exactly what they're doing here - steeling the good and making it bad! It should be a crime with a sentencing of the death penalty.

I don't mean to be a fly in the kool-aid but this just reeks of bad idea!

I'm feeling more and more happy about this as I read about it.

A week or so ago we broke the biggest story of the year, one that let you guys know that the long gestating remake of Evil Dead was indeed a go. The next day a director was announced ... Federico Alvarez. Recently the filmmaker spoke a bit about the project.

In an interview with Spanish website El Pais, Alvarez dropped the following on fans. We did our best in terms of translation.

"We realize the mistakes not to make," says Alvarez. "As fans of the original, we know we are going to offend those who are also fans just by taking this job. We're going to honor the original film along with the existing fans and hope to bring in a new audience as well."

"Because we are fans of the original, we realize that nobody wants to see a celebrity in a remake like this," he continues. "The only recognizable face will be that of Bruce Campbell, and he will be in a cameo toward the end of the film. We are going to change the characters and some story details, while keeping the basic outline of friends who are beleaguered by demons in a cabin alone."

Alvarez continues, "Sam Raimi says there's a fine line between horror and comedy. The original Evil Dead was intended as a straight horror movie with scenes of extreme gore directly designed to shock the viewer. I rented the movie with a friend from a video store at just thirteen years old, and that was a big mistake! The film scared the life out of us."

Hopefully that's the direction he'll choose to go in!

I've read some places that they aren't going to have some new person play Ash, and if Bruce has a cameo towards the end of the movie, maybe that means he'll come back as Ash in some way?

I don't think the issue in Hollywood is a lack of ideas. I'm sure there are plenty of film-makers with excellent ideas. The main issue is funding. The studios are making massive profits on remakes because people keep watching them, so they'll keep making new ones instead of taking a chance on an original idea. The only way they'll stop is if people stop buying them. This is why I welcome more independent film-making. With the internet and cameras getting cheaper and cheaper, I think we'll see more good low budget movies in the future. Well hopefully anyways. Sorry for the semi off-topic reply.

Well, this remake is supposedly going to have a very low budget. That's the only way you can really do The Evil Dead justice.

On an extra cool note, on the director's Youtube page, someone asked about Evil Dead 4, which he responded with...

Im doing the Evil Dead (remake) Sam will do EvilDead 4 sonner or later (trust me, I know..)

I don't see how anyone could hate the remake, at this point, even if it fucking sucks. Worst case scenario, it's going to make Evil Dead 4 look better by comparison. Also, it could strum up interest in Evil Dead 4, since they could use the lack of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell as a reason The Evil Dead remake might not have been good.

I didn't want to have to bump this thread from so far back, but it's pretty relevant.

Evil Dead 2 was basically a remake of 1 simply not titled as such. There is no reason this couldn't have been the same way and titled Evil Dead 4 other than to take in cash from the remake crowd. Of which I'm not a part of and neither is my money.

The interesting thing is that I've been following news of this for years and have yet to hear a single fan say anything nice about it. Yet I'm sure it will make a shit ton of money.

Not many people like Drag Me To Hell, but I thought it was a great semi-spin off of the Evil Dead series. It got me hoping for Evil Dead 4, but this remake looks like it's gonna be handled correctly. With Raimi and Campbell supervising this project, I think I'm gonna like it.

Gore wasn't the reason I became obsessed with The Evil Dead. This looks just like any other remake to me where the idea that a bunch of money, gore and grit is an improvement on charm, story and originality.

Gore wasn't the reason I became obsessed with The Evil Dead.

Really? The quality of the gore and special/make up effects was my main attraction to the series. And let's be honest, the original was one extremely gory film.

It's never really looked real though and as such was part of the character. It was always meant to look a little cheesy. You were supposed to have fun watching it. Even in the first and more serious film. The stop motion and puppets are grotesque cartoons. This one looks like they just followed the "grittier" Platinum Dunes approach and might as well be any other remake out there.

Hey. So the new Evil Dead movie is coming out soon so I made a trailer/video for the movie along to Sweet Tooth. It gets pretty violent incase you don't like that stuff. For the people who have not seen the trailers for Evil Dead yet. I pretty much have all the footage in this one video. Enjoy. Movie looks like it is going to be amazing. I loved last year when Cabin In The Woods came out. Now this year I have this movie.

I couldn't agree more with this. The one thing that I enjoyed about the originals is that it was actually quite funny. Don't get me wrong, I think that the trailer looks awesome, but it doesn't look like it is going to have the humor that the originals had. The remake looks like it is going to be a straight up horror/gore/torture porn flick.
I will definitely go see it, but it will be hard to watch that movie without Bruce Campbell being the lead man! I know he's too old now to play that character, but nonetheless- Bruce Campbell was so perfect in the originals, that whoever that is filling those shoes is going to have a hell of a lot to live up to!

It takes alot for me to see a movie in the theaters, but this one was an easy choice.
The original Evil Dead terrified the fuck out of me as a child, always loved it. Was never too big on the sequels.. what was great about the first film was its raw terror and grittiness.
What I hated most about part 2 was how it pretty much did away with most of the events of the first film, re-imagined it, then turned it into a cutesy camp fest. Fine, but I prefer the horror.

So with Evil Dead 2013, it's back to the horror. Gory as fuck, gruesome body-horror, and best of all, it definitely feels like it's in the same universe as the original films.

Without giving anything away; you should know that it's not a remake...
Technically it's a sequel, which will eventually tie into Evil Dead 4/Army of Darkness II (which will be directed by Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell).

It's certainly worth seeing in the theaters. Horror movies like this don't come along that often.

I agree the gore and blood were absolutely amazing. I loved the no holding back on the graphic side of torn ligaments and body parts. Love the twist on the story as I'm sure Bruce has a role in picking that. I took my ma since she raised me on the classic version and she freakin loved it. Definately worth going to see.

I love this movie. Was just so fucking awesome the way they didn't use CGI like most horror movies use now. Cabin In The Woods movies are just awesome. I would rank this one among my top 5 forsure.

1. Evil Dead 2
2. Cabin In The Woods
3. Cabin Fever
4. Evil Dead 2013
5. Tucker and Dale vs Evil

It's always good to see someone mention Tucker and Dale vs Evil. I fucking loved that movie. Probably more than I loved Cabin in the Woods, to be honest.

The new Evil Dead was rad as hell. I loved the shit out of it.

I liked Evil Dead trilogy.. But this one well, let's just say that I'm one of those "No Bruce Campbell as Ash, I'm not gonna see this" type of people.. Gonna pass this one.

I was feeling the same way... but I came to the conclusion that realistically- there wouldn't be a way making that possible. Think of like this- Bruce Campbell is a bit old to be playing Ash in a remake or even a sequel, and if they had hired a young actor to play the character of "Ash," the criticism would have probably been too much that he wasn't enough like Bruce Campbell's Ash and it would've ruined to movie.

I just back from the theater from seeing this film, and I like the fact that they didn't have another actor playing Ash... those are shoes way too big for another actor to fill. This film was great! It had everything I love about great horror films- tons of blood, gore and violence but not like all the overly redundant torture porn crap. It was creepy, and it kept me completely entertained for the entirety of the film. There were little nods to the original, which was satisfying for fans like myself of the original but it wasn't trying too hard to be like the original film.

I don't feel like this was really a remake. Maybe a continuation from the others... like this was the same cabin where the other films took place, but this movie is what happens when a group of kids come to the same cabin today. They even had the old yellow Oldsmobile that was the first film, but it was completely covered by branches, moss and debris and it looked like it had been parked outside of the cabin since the day that Ash and his friends were stranded there. It gave me the impression that this was a continuation, not a remake. Maybe I'm wrong- I don't know.

Either way, I loved it! And if you are a fan of the original and Bruce Campbell, than stay until the credits are over. There is a little Easter Egg at the end of the credits. This movie is a must see!

I'm probably the only one that wasn't really impressed by it.

It was alright. There were only a few times when it ever felt like an Evil Dead movie to me.

I didn't really like the unnecessary explanation or the need for an act 3 villain. Blaming it on the devil just feels so toothless and tacky to me. I don't need a "big bad" everything you need to know is in the title. EVIL DEAD.

It was a little confusing. LOL. But now I like horror movies that have gore in them. I never had the mindset to like gorey movies, and I deff lost my appetite at the Alamo theater where they serve food. I am getting into thriller a lot lately more.

Just thought this little newsbyte might be of interest to you and whoever else:

Director Fede Alvarez dropped a bomb on WonderCon audiences during an Evil Dead panel this Sunday in the Anaheim convention center n California.

Back when the red band trailer had been released, We had pointed out some interesting imagery that suggested that maybe the new Evil Dead, in theaters April 5, was actually a sequel. Alvarez confirmed this to the WonderCon crowd, while also adding something major.

He told audiences that an Evil Dead 2 (followed by a planned Evil Dead 3), and the recently announced Army of Darkness 2, will eventually crossover for the ultimate cult horror movie Evil Dead 7, reports Movieweb. So, after two sequels to the current remake – the remake universe will collide with the old “Ash” universe in a film that will amount to be the 4th installment in both franchises.

At this time, Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi are working on the screenplay for Army of Darkness 2, which will continue the story of Ash as seen in the original The Evil Dead from 1981. While Fede Alvarez might have been joking, suggests the site, who was on hand for the panel, he seemed serious when he said he plans to join both his new franchise together with Sam Raimi’s old franchise.

Hail the king, baby.

http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3226144/as-we-suspected-evil-dead-is-a-sequel-that-will-eventually-leads-to-major-crossover-in-evil-dead-7/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

That certainly does sound pretty awesome!

The news is almost a month old and there doesn't seem to have been much follow-up about it yet though, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Also...

I saw this with a couple pals about a week ago. They thought it was just about the greatest thing ever made while I fall pretty squarely into the "it was pretty good" camp. It definitely had some killer moments and plenty of self-assured, badass swagger to it and easily exceeded expectations for the average, modern, worldwide-release-from-a-major-studio horror flick. But it was also definitely going for a fairly srs bzns tone and some of the not-so-good CGI, cornier elements, and just plain flat performances weren't really helping with that.

But fuck it. It pretty much OPENED with the tree rape and put an awesome spin on it besides, so it definitely wins points back for sheer BALLS, lol.

I'm still looking forward to whatever follows, even if it's only an extended, unrated release somewhere down the line.

:)

Heh, a few days ago I've done mix of Tainted Love video, Evil Dead trailer and You Sexy Thing song mix.
And now I'm here and it seems, that my video fits perfectly, to show my attitude to Evil Dead series and other gore comedies.
(of course I like Evil Dead and Marylin Manson stuff, I just... enjoy it more than others).
