View Full Version : 'Slo-Mo-Tion'

I might be jumping the gun a little bit here, but I felt like sharing my thoughts on what Marilyn Manson had to say on the subject of Slo-Mo-Tion during That Metal Show (http://www.providermodule.com/index.php?fn_mode=fullnews&fn_id=353).

Marilyn Manson said the following on the visual ideas for Slow-Mo-Tion

I wanted to do like a casting call and blowing heads off with a shot gun, in slow motion.

I don't know if anyone else was reminded of the Zapruder video, but I was. Because whenever I've seen that video it's either just showing Kennedy getting shot in slow motion, or they show it and then replay it in slow motion.
For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q91RZko5Gw

It also reminded me of this scene in Born Villain, which isn't totally slowed down but it slow enough for you to see the head shot.

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/4655/bornvillainshot.jpg

So this thread may turn out to be totally fucking dumb lol and the visuals or song may have no connection to that at all, but from what Manson was saying that's what it reminded me of.

I still seriously believe all of that was a joke...

At the very least the hyphenated title. Seriously; go back and look at his expressions when he talked about it.

yeah, i'm not sure how serious to take anything he said during that interview, really....

I don't mean to insult Manson, but nowadays I hardly take most things that he says seriously. He seems to use puns very regularly in conversation and he can be slightly ironic at times. In contrast with the past, he always seemed to be very serious whilst talking in interviews and there seemed to be a lot more integrity in what he used to say (in my opinion). Also, he seems to be very humorous these days which is not how he used to be a few years back.

Although, I still think he is a talented artist and my perspective on that has not changed.

No, come on dude. Manson has always been pretty damn humorous dude from the very beginning.

No, come on dude. Manson has always been pretty damn humorous dude from the very beginning.

He might have had some humour before. Although, he seems to be acting that way pretty often now. For example, his appearance on that metal show and whenever he is stopped in the street by paparazzi.

If you compare it with his interview in Argentina back in 1996, he hardly seemed to joke much and seemed very serious. The same thing when he was interviewed in Japan in 1996 and the Matt Pinfield interview with Twiggy, (despite the conversation about pulling down Manson's pants).

Well it could be, I did say this thread could turn out to be dumb. But I couldn't help think of those things when he discussed his video idea/visuals he had before he wrote the song, whether it was a joke or not.

It's not the first time he's discussed having a visual idea and creating a song about it, I think this is on a similar level

"The Golden Age of Grotesque was the last song we wrote", says Manson.
"I woke up one day and I had had a dream about a piano on fire. I came down to the studio and said to the band I want to write a song that's a burning piano. I didn't really have to say much more than that; I let them follow my lead.
http://www.providermodule.com/media/?v=i/2003/metalhammer

I seem to remember him mentioning in Golden Age interviews about creating a song idea based on a stampeding Elephant as well.

Manson's always been a pretty humorous guy, what makes it hard to tell the two apart some times is he will joke about the serious, and be very serious about his jokes.

I did believe manson when he was talking about this song. I think he's so creative, I love that! I loved the title of Arma-Goddamn-Motherfucking-Geddon, Wow, mOBSCENE, (s)AINT - all very lovely ideas. Slo-Mo-Tion is no exception to me. Can't wait to see what this will be.

I think there's plenty of little connections to be made here, even if they're not intentional. Or who knows, maybe they are?

Reflecting on The High End Of Low and its focus on film, the lyric "Timelapse and dancing and rotting in place, and we've reached the high end of low" springs to mind, from I Have To Look Up Just To See Hell. Time-Lapse photography is essentially the same principal as Slow Motion film.

The idea of a casting call video reminds me of "Don't call us we'll call you" during Doppelherz. Manson was also on the soundtrack for The Matrix, a film which famously used slow motion techniques to show gunfire. They even coined the term 'Bullet Time' because of it. Manson also mentioned how The Matrix imagery and his involvement with Columbine were related during That Metal Show, perhaps this was intentional in relation to Slow-Mo-Tion, he doesn't usually talk about that film when discussing Columbine. Then there's the 'Headshot', a studio photograph used by actors and their agents to try and get them auditions, a form of casting call...

I also thought of this untitled painting:-

Note how the head is a videocamera, and the arms are guns.

Pure conjecture I say! It's an interesting way to think of that. The way I saw it was as a joke. We never got a dildo cam video, which was disappointing, but still a funny comment. He did mention feeding Christians to the lions again and we got a yawning MGM Lion out of that. Then again I always took the lyric from Evidence "Head's blown clean off, your mouth paid off" as an oral sex reference, so perhaps we'll get a music video with aspiring porn stars giving the band blow jobs? Who knows?

Well, Manson has always been notorious for creating new words by combining two different words. Phenobarbiedoll is one that comes to mind. Maybe this is his new thing.

I'm not sure if he would do something like this after the Coma White video. Plus, shooting someone in the head with a shotgun would remove the head. I would still love to see it however!

Hmm. Schlomo is the Hebrew version of Solomon, who in one year earned 666 talents of gold.

And "Solomon," is a Latin invention combining moon and sol, or sun. So Sol y Mon, the moon has now eclipsed the sun.

Also, Solomon is famous for building a temple, which the Antichrist is also supposed to do.

Whoops, just realized that has nothing to do with anything. My bad.

^And the Song of Solomon. Don't forget that fine piece of poetry.

Song of Solomon 8:7 "Many waters cannot quench love, nor can rivers drown it. If a man tried to buy love with all his wealth, his offer would be utterly scorned."

The hybrid offspring of a male tiger and a female lion is sometimes called a TION (or tigon or tiglon).

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L9b309vNHxk/TwNEvUbM3FI/AAAAAAAAHYM/kQSqh1rH_s0/s1600/Tiglon.jpg

They're pretty much the opposite of the better known liger.

http://cdn.marilynmanson.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/slomotion1.jpeg

And there's MM with tiger stripes and a lion's mane in a pic from the Slo-Mo-TION video shoot. "RAWR."

I think the next pic may be shopped but it illustrates the mane and stripes pretty well.

I think Manson has referred to the make up as Zebra make up.

Never thought about the boa wrapped around him being some kind of mane though. I guess you could look at is as a mix of a predator and prey.

Brian, anytime before 2007 I would have thought these deep, (over)analytical posts of yours that make a lot of assumptions had something to them, because that's the sort of attitude Manson had. But the way he's coming across in interviews right now... Playing with the whole "rock and roll asshole" kind of thing, but also trying to talk about art... I don't know, it doesn't fit at all. I don't see 2012 Marilyn Manson thinking hard as he writes lyrics, and inserting information like this. I wish he would, believe me. But I can't say I see it.

It's not deep. He just likes to write songs about and dress up like lion/tiger hybrids. Is that so hard to believe?

I know that a lot of this high-intellect stuff goes over people's heads and I do my best to try and dumb things down a bit so that others can grasp it. Do I fail in that? Yes. Sometimes I do. Does wanting to spread knowledge and enlightenment to my fellows make me a fool? I cannot say. But if it does then "fool" is a hat that I wear proudly in the service of others and I do so without shame. No, never shame.

For the record, I don't really believe that either Norsefire or Marilyn Manson have any Zionist or Anti-Zionists agendas. It was just ridiculously easy to go there once a "z" animal was brought into the mix. That said, I really wish Lebras were real. :(

Not quite solved (sic) but I think you are definitely on to something. Is Manson referring to himself as a maxi-pad? Let's let the lyrics do the talking.

"Here comes the THE MOON again."

Is anyone else here particularly familiar with Ultravox? They're a seminal UK band, progenitors of the New Wave movement. Very influential, if that sort of thing is your bag, and it's very much mine.
Anyway, listening to them this week, I enjoyed this comparison. Ultravox have a song called Slow Motion, and I think it sounds very similar to, well... Slo-Mo-Tion!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NBjV95lClY

The chorus is almost identical, and the way the bass rhythm drives the song also. Also, read through the song's lyrics as you listen:-

No reply, I'm trying hardTo somehow frame a reply
Pictures, I've got pictures
And I run them in my head
When I can't sleep at night

Looking out at a white world and the moon
I feel a soft exchange taking place
Merging with the people on the page
Blurring my face and conversation

Slow motion

Hush, can you feel the trees so far away?
Hush, can you feel the breeze of another day?

When we held each other close in the night
While we wheeled away in our own light
Stepping sideways into our own time
Such a simple way

Slow motion

And we held each other close in the night
While we wheeled away in our own light
And some of us found another time
And drifted away

Slow motion

How bizarre! Nearly every line of that bears similarity to something Manson has written on his last two records, at least. Have fun making the connections...

Here's a slightly different angle...
I always thought Slo-Mo-Tion was about Holywood, but told from Holywood's perspective. In effect it could be the Holywood anthem. Could this mean that the little girl in the white overcoat is a young Coma White being introduced to Holywood and its lifestyle? Its probably not the case, but I like that angle.
