I split off the Film & TV topic and it is now just for films again [located here (http://www.providermodule.com/forum/showthread.php/2856-Recent-Films-You-ve-Seen)], I thought it would be cool to separate the two mediums. Post whatever series, specials, comedies, whatever it is you like to watch on the picture-box.

Currently I am taking advantage of Channel 4's 4OD service, and have stepped into the world of Misfits, which is wicked, I really enjoy it. Some of the characterisations can be a little off sometimes, and I am still not convinced by Rudy as a replacement for Nathan in series 3, but the writing is still inventive and the overall black comedy element to it appeals to me most. I also resonate with Simon's character a lot, but am still curious as to what they'll do with his development story... Does anyone else watch this show?

http://i701.photobucket.com/albums/ww16/winfalcon/tv/misfits.png

Also on 4OD I have watched Phone Shop. I know the whole faux-urban ghetto speak is being lampooned in the show, which I enjoy, but sometimes it can get a bit too much. The most recent episode with Razz Prince being a good example. However, overall it makes people who work in retail and take both it, and themselves waaaay too seriously look like the idiots they are. It's also interesting that phones are by nature, tools of communication, but these characters are all more-or-less inept at proper communication skills.

http://i701.photobucket.com/albums/ww16/winfalcon/tv/phone_shop.png

That leads me onto the more precise social commentary of The Armando Iannucci Shows, which in his classic deadpan, world-weary manner is still biting and acidic nonetheless.

On TV last week - This is England '88. Once again Shane Meadows and the cast deliver something really special.

I've read that Meadows is planning This is England '90 and I was a little sceptical thinking how far can he go with this but after TIS '88 I only have high hopes for the next instalment.

S.D. I never really got into Misfits. I watched one episode and found myself disliking just about every character. Perhaps I should give it more of a chance.

Hopefully by 2015 he'll have done This Is England 2150, where a resurrected, cybernetically enhanced Thomas Turgoose can fight it out with warlords of the eighth galactic alliance whilst wearing Doc Martens.

Black Mirror in Channel 4.

You have got to love the way Charlie Brooker's brain works when he delivers satire in an attempt to show how much the human race has become inslaved to the reality we live in right now. I have only watched the first two episodes, The National Anthem and 15 Million Merits and will watch last nights episode tonight. The one that had the greatest impact was of course the first episode, which showed just how far people were governed by what was on the screen and less about what was around them - but seriously, only Brooker could get away with a PM being asked to fuck a pig live on air.

The second episode was not as strong, although the concept of 15 minutes of fame over integrity was a good idea. Looking forward to viewing the last one.

If you have ever watched his Screen Wipe of read his books you will love this (if you have not watched them already)

It's a weird show, the characters do come off as intentionally dislikeable. But then you get a few episodes in and they become strangely compelling, even if you still think they're twats. I thought I would loathe Kelly, but she really develops later on down the line, and although she's still gobby, so does Alisha.
Because I'm a puerile fool I instantly got on with Nathan's character, and on the flipside my occasionally introverted side empathises with Simon. But after series one they're all fairly different people, and the storylines driving that development are really well conceived.

Black Mirror in Channel 4.
Being a fan of just about everything else Brooker has done (including Konnie Huq! ohnohedidnt.jpg), I really need to check Black Mirror. Work's been busy at the moment and I wanted to finish Misfits before getting wrapped up in anything else, but it has me intrigued from the trailers.
Likewise, I've actually not seen any of the This Is England series, not out of disinterest, it's just one of those vehicles I've not had the chance to watch. But I want to, so I should get on that soon.

Yeah, try to if you get the chance. Although the subject matter can be quite dark it is sprinkled with humour and I also think you will totally approve of the soundtrack.

And since that's over, I need to catch up on the rest of the second season of The Walking Dead.

Some years ago I got Heroes season 1 to watch, probably inbetween a season break of LOST. But I only ever watched half of it and then just lost track and never went back to it. So last week I started Heroes all over again and this time I'm almost at the end of season 1, the bonus this time around is I can probably buy all the seasons now for a lower price of what they would of been if I had followed the series when it was on.

I'm also watching Stargate Atlantis, because I never finished that and I still have the last two seasons to watch for the first time.

Atlantis has to have of the worst series finales I've ever seen. They were obviously going to give it the same treatment the gave SG1 with the straight to dvd movies, but after Universe tanked they gave up :(

Yeah they had movies planned, and then they just couldn't do them. It's a shame really for a TV series that ran so long from SG.1 through to Universe and now it's pretty much dead and gone. :( I was hoping at least one more SG.1 film would be made, or the Atlantis films.

ALCATRAZ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_jAlFqvASU

A new show just started in the US. I watched the first two episodes and I expected something a little different. All the prisoners just vanished, but they don't seem too bothered about that and now they're set out to catch them as they come back. I hope over the next few episodes they get more into why they disappeared, where they went etc. I think it will turn into the show I expected it to be from watching the trailer, it's just a bit slow at the start.

Wll have to give that a go

The only part where I can see people would compare it to LOST is that Jorge Garcia is in it and they tell some of the story through flash backs... but it's really nothing at all like LOST so far.

The 4400 popped into my head too when I first watched the trailer.

I watched the 3rd episode of Alcatraz, I liked it, but it's just not fucking getting into anything about why the prisoners vanished and are now coming back.
The prisoners don't even seem bothered that they're now living in a world that is very different to what they left, better technology etc. If that was me I would fucking freak out!
Then the people that know these people are coming back don't seem to be really looking into where the fuck they've been. If I was told someone who supposedly died just showed up looking like they haven't even aged a day, I think I would want some fucking answers.

So, Alcatraz, I like it, but I just want them to start getting into some of those areas and stop acting like everything is normal.

I have been watching BBC's Sherlock.

In addition to This Is England as discussed earlier, Sherlock is another apparently marvellous programme I'd not had the chance to see. My father gave me the first series as a Christmas gift and I loved it. Brilliant television, brilliant actors, and a great re-imagining of a classic literary character.
Actually, my ex-girlfriend saw me recently and said I would enjoy Sherlock, and after seeing it, I jokingly asked why on earth she thought I'd be drawn to a brooding, acerbic, black-haired know-it-all like Cumberbatch's Holmes...

Yet another modern wonder I've only just taken the time to explore is Life On Mars. I know the premise, and precisely how it would appeal to someone obsessed with Doctor Who, time-travel, the 1970s, and with a soft-spot for Goodnight Sweetheart, so shoot me for only just having started watching it. Amazing television so far though, I am grateful to a friend for having lent me both series.

Life On Mars
LOM is definitely one of the most enjoyable series I've watched. Gene Hunt has got to be one of the most memorable tv characters in recent years and I love Sam's bewilderment at how things were actually done in the 70's, or more to the point how they actually managed to solve any crimes. It's funny, it's sad. I particularly feel sadness for Sam a good many times especially when he's having one of his "moments". The show is well written and that soundtrack! The soundtrack cannot be topped.

If you have the urge to discuss any aspect of LOM, please feel free. :)

30 Rock and Dr. Who and Top Gear! My boyfriend and I are on the 3rd season of Dr. Who already....we both cried like bitches at the ends of seasons 1 and 2. Season 2 ESPECIALLY, I was fucking sobbing with snot running down my face and everything. I've never loved a show as much as I've loved Dr. Who.

The show is so crazy. I've never watched anything like it. So many twists and turns. Every episode is like a season finale and a season premiere. Unfortunately, I finished the show. I would have rather had some of my family members die than have this show end. I'm a sad boy.

Watched a few episodes. I think I'm currently an episode or two behind.

The Walking Dead. What a dull fucking show. Bad acting, bad dialogue, and annoying, unlikeable characters. I like drama but none of it is done well and is pointless because I can't get invested in these awful characters. Why do I still watch? I'm a fucking loser?

MY SOCIAL NETWORK STALKER

It was on Channel 4 last week.

It concerned a girl who was subjected to a stalking campaign and it eventually transpired that the culprit was her boyfriend.

I should have had sympathy for her but she was so incredibly stupid and blinkered that I found myself having very little sympathy for her at all. Did any UK people see this?

Norsefire

I might check that out in a minute Barbs!

I've been watching a lot of documentaries on 4OD recently, the one about the London underground that was pretty interesting. I also watched the ones on that Katie would got acid poured on her face, there's a series where she goes and meets other people with problems whilst setting up her charity, and then there's some others with a recent one being her getting some work done on her eye that got hit with the acid so she can now see a little bit through it.

I watched that one as well Norse. She's very inspirational and never complains. She just gets on with things and is a good role model for other people who have been through similar horrendous ordeals.

If you get the chance try and watch that doc I mentioned. I'm just interested to see how she comes across to other people.

Norsefire
02-27-2012, 07:18 PM
I completely agree about Katie, I think she even says it herself about how it could of changed her life to the worse. She could of locked herself away but she went above it all and just go on it with everything, and I like the way she can actually laugh about things, I'm sure deep down she could get upset about it all but she doesn't really show it.

I've also been watching Coppers and Big Fat Gypsy Weddings on 4OD as well. I never catch shows when they're on the TV, I rarely have TV on unless it's a dvd so I have to catch it all up online instead. Coppers is a good programme.

Going to check out that Social Network Stalker now before I go to bed.

EDIT:
Just watched My Social Network Stalker and it's a completely fucked up situation. Everything her boyfriend did was so wrong and obviously he had some serious issues.
But when she talked about the naked photos of her that he was posting all over the internet, she said he caught her in the bath... but then later it showed a whole range of photos so she must of let him take quite a few more. Then after all that happening, she did a video which also made its way out.
I know she talked about him and his anger, but it makes you wonder why the hell she would stay with him if he was like that, and either she let him take pics and videos or he forced her, if he forced her then again, it makes you wonder why she would stay with someone like that.

You see, this is why I found myself having very little sympathy for her.

At University she was studying Computer Science !!

She was completely blinkered to the fact that he was responsible. First of all naked pictures of her (which he had taken) are sent to an adult website. He blames his friend and she falls for it. She is apparently so traumatised by this that she starts trawling through the internet, entering her own name in the search and asks these sites if the pictures can be taken down. Next thing he asks her if she will pose for more nude pics and let him film her engaged in sexual acts and she ... agrees ! These photographs and videos then appear on adult websites. It didn't exactly take a genius to work out who was responsible.

It seemed that only the father of the entire family had a brain cell because he eventually established which IP address these were being submitted from.

Her boyfriend absolutely had no right to put this kind of stuff on the internet and his sentence was way too lenient but in a way I felt she was somewhat the author of her own misfortune.

-----

Did you ever watch "Faking It" on Channel 4? I'm sure 4OD would still have some of those on there. I really miss that series.

I completely agree, she should of known straight away that it was her boyfriend doing it all, but after the shit she went through having her photos online and what that did to her you would think she would know any further pics would probably leak out as well.

I did watch Faking it years ago when it was on, and it is on 4OD I see a little banner for it all the time.

I heard about the BFGW dress maker getting her own show, don't know if I would watch that though. The Gypsy's interest me though, it amazes me how they can just pull up with a caravan, get moved on again and again and they can afford to live. Where does all the money come from? lol

I don't know, they could film her doing every individual stitch as she's making a dress, that would fill up a lot of time. BTW if you watch this series of BFGW I think the pineapple and palm tree dresses are shit! I think they're in the first episode, compared to the other stuff she does I would of been disappointed.

I watched American Horror story when it first came out, the first 2 or 3 eps showed some promise but christ they totally ruined it with that stupid blonde kid, absolutely dire by the end. Caught an episode of the 2nd season and didn't like it at all.

I recently re watched a mini series called The Lost Room, there's only a few episodes in it but if you can find it online I recommend watching it, it's an entertaining little scifi story.

Also watching Happy Endings, anyone else watch it? And I always watch a couple of old Simpsons or Father Ted episodes during the week when I'm bored.

I'm also considering re watching Lost again for the first time since it ended, I have the bluray boxset sitting here waiting. I don't know if I've forgotten enough of the story line to do it yet though and I wasn't really keen on the ending-I'm still not sure if I feel totally shafted by it or not to be honest.

I've seen LOST so many times... I can't even remember. But this year I'm going to try not to watch it at all, take a year off and then watch it all again next year.

!!!!! omg I LOVED that show! In my opinion the pilot was the best of all the episodes, but I still think that for an American primetime TV show it was absolutely wonderful.

I just finished watching it up to where they stopped. Can't wait for the final episodes to air, but I don't understand why it got such poor ratings and lead to cancellation. I loved it and thought it was quite good TV.

Am I the only one who thinks that Once Upon a Time I a great serie? Second season on it. I really have some affection about Robert Carlyle's acting since trainspotting and the whole concept of bringing it all into one saga is cool.

Others are Hell On Wheels also the second season. Just love Christopher Heyerdahl's acting as (The Swede) and I think it's a quite good story.

We also went as far as the first season of Stargate Universe.
I may sound silly but I also like The Mentalist. It's just nice to watch and Simon Baker isn't that bad. Season 4 untill now.

Channels: bbc entertainmentt and knowledge. Whitechapel, QI, TopGear, Antiques roadshow both english and american episodes, yeah so on.

I ended up watching all 22 episodes that weekend. Damn shame that show didn't find it's audience. Every episode felt like a season premiere/finale.

I watched all of Terra Nova on Netflix. It was ok, a bit campy but it seemed to be finding it's footing towards the end. TERRIBLE CGI.

I actually haven't been watching that much TV lately, but I still happen to watch South Park regularly every season. I usually make sure not to miss it, and I occasionally watch SpongeBob SquarePants whenever I catch it. I'm not exactly a hardcore SpongeBob fan, but I still have to admit that it's sort of like a Rocko's Modern Life that had actually stuck with Nickelodeon for quite some time. (And I loved Rocko's Modern Life.)

Oh yes, and I occasionally watch Family Guy and American Dad too. I still happen to like American Dad just a little bit better than Family Guy though. This thread also reminds me to try to catch Curb Your Enthusiasm every once in a while too.

Breaking Bad (even though it's in the off-season).

Mad Men.

The Walking Dead.

Been going through Rescue Me on Netflix and have enjoyed it despite it having quite a few issues from time to time.

Have planned on watching American Horror Story but just never got around to watching anything past the first episode (and I really enjoyed the first episode, so I don't really know what's keeping me.)

Every once in a while I'll watch the Daily Show or Colbert Report but not often enough to really say I watch it regularly.

Seinfeld re-runs.

Have been re-watching Sunny and whenever Louie comes back on will watch that as well.

I am sooooo happy happy happy!

Hannibal the TV series just started (April 4th) and iTunes is selling it!! I've already bought the first season even though only two episodes have aired. As the episodes are put onto iTunes they'll be automatically downloaded to my iTunes for me to watch over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over . . . . .

Ironically I took a day off from work the night the show airs on TV so I was able to watch the second episode. The first episode is free to watch/download on iTunes. I don't have anything to record shows and I work at night so buying this series of iTunes is perfect for me.

I'm so happy happy happy happy happy happy happy happy happy happy happy happy!

I finished watching 666 Park Avenue today. For some odd reason they aired so many episodes and then stopped it leaving this stupid huge gap before the final 4. I think the US is still waiting for them to air but other countries have now aired them so they're online.

It was a great TV series, I was happy with the way this season ended. It was wrapped up, but if it had gone on for a second season they could easily have carried it on. So I'm pleased it didn't leave fans with a WTF? type ending. Still not sure why this was even cancelled when you look at some of the shit that's renewed on TV these days.

i tried to watch that when it first started - it was okay but couldn't quite get into it. However I find TV execs are too fickle nowadays and shut down shows too easily.

Im currently watching Continuum on SyFy. Really enjoying it as a show - even better now that Nicholas Lea is in it, reprising his role as Rat Boy (Kyrcheck) from the X Files - at least that's how his new character comes across, so I get to shout "fuck off rat boy" when he co,es on screen.
Also enjoyed the first season of The Fall on BBC 2 with Gillian Anderson. A very different kind of serial killer/cop drama which is so much more intelligent and well crafted. Can't wait till the second series.

Also, Breaking Bad is just about to end and everything. For me, it's been some of the best television I have witnessed. The show has had so many great moments and has been consistently great throughout it's run. It's been wild from the start of season 1 and has only gotten more tense and exciting with every season. I don't think there has been one filler story arc or a insignificant scene or whatever in the whole series. Everything has built up to these final moments. And it's complete chaos now as the end nears. Brilliant TV writing. I am gonna miss it when it ends.

Definitely! I get really pissed off at writers who work on television scripts that haven't heard that stories are written with a premise, developement and denoument (fancy mispelling for beginning, middle and end) just like any other kind of story. This show is tight. Add great character actors and gritty victim of circumstances twists and it is glued to the tv watching. If you like Sons of Anarchy, this show has the same kind of slow burn but takes it up a couple of notches.

Haven't seen Dexter since S03 and it'll still take a while to sink in, but the BB finale was satisfying. Thought it felt safe... didn't see any surprises from a show that's always been about expecting the unexpected, but Vince Gilligan didn't fuck it up or damage its legacy and that's pretty incredible. Anyway, glad that BB ended before it started slipping, because the show started taking more liberties in Season 5 and I'm not sure it could have continued much longer... but right now it's the most perfect example of what TV is capable of, and I don't know if anyone will top it.

Almost hooked instantly as much as when TSCC Season 1 came out in 2008...

Agent Coulson lives and behaves with a bit of panache for dry humor and calculating smart-ass attitude that's almost like he's gonna take Nick Fury's job and he feels like he has that Charlie's Angels vibe attitude and add that to Agent Zed's persona in M.I.B.

Consider this show as a sub follow up to the Avengers' movie itself.

The start of the first season was a bit random, but I guess it set up the characters and stuff and I was hooked after a couple of episodes in. Just starting season 2 and trying not to read anything that might spoil it since I'm so behind.

I watched all of Once Upon a Time over the past few weeks. I feel pretty disgusted with myself lol. It's absolutely terrible, but for some reason I really enjoy watching it. It feels like the sort of show you would watch and love as a kid, but then find out it's actually awful when you grow up and watch it again.

Also started marathoning Masters of Sex today, and am almost caught up. It's pretty good, even though I hate most of the characters, but I guess at least they're interesting. It really makes me happy I don't live in the 50's. lol I recommend it.

That picture of the Breaking Bad DVD brings back so many memories. It's the best TV show, or anything with a story, I've ever witnessed in my short 23 year old life. I urge anyone who hasn't watched it already to give it a try. The first season is a little slow but it picks up, and when it does it's the best thing ever. Watch it.

I am on the last two episodes of Breaking Bad. It is definitely one of the better written shows and leaves me begging for the next episode, which is a difficult task to accomplish. Six Feet Under is still my favorite series, but this is definitely second or third.

Now that I finishing Breaking Bad, I just started watching The Following. For being a primtime, major network show in the U.S., it pushes the boudaries. It's a good series. Not sure how far it can go, but definitely enjoying what I've seen.

Has anyone watched the Hulu series Misfits?

I signed up for Hulu Plus two days ago and have Misfits queued up. First I want to get through some of the Michael J. Fox show, which I'm enjoying so far. My only problem are his kids (Doc's line from the end of Back To The Future is going through my head). At this point I'm not sure if his family needs a little retooling or if the characters just have to grow on me. But I like the rest of the show enough to keep going with it.

I use Hulu free and Netflix. THe only thing that pisses me off is CBS. You can't find repeats of Castle unless you buy the DVD or are in the current season. I have a good pirate source, but the servers are sloooooow. Hope you enjoy Misfits when you get to it. I haven't watched anything but movies that MJ Fox has down since Family Ties. I usually do a marathon of The Sopranos once every year or two. I'm nearing the close of series five.

Going through the entire run at a pace, you realise that although the narrative trundles along from episode-to-episode, there are occasionally really important, subtle episodes that are meant to stand out, even if they don't feature a major plot device. The two I've recalled this run both involve flashbacks, namely Down Neck and In Camelot. They're divided by a lot of other episodes, but in both we experience memories of Tony Soprano's upbringing in the '60s and '70s.
I think it was really wise of David Chase to decide against bridging the gap between seeing Johnny Soprano as a younger man, and hearing of his death in 1986, because there's this murky period where Tony stops being a child and becomes an adult, seemingly with his father more-or-less absent. Although much is made of the surviving Livia Soprano's psychosis and instability as an older woman before her death, the flashbacks reveal a more damaged, neglected figure, left at the mercy of Johnny's drinking and whoring. That's where the space between the two episodes is filled. Tony's eventual revulsion by his father's ageing mistress during In Camelot is executed perfectly, and from the housebound, sexually alert Livia, to the empty depiction following her miscarriage, we start to see a multitude of factors contributing to her later misery.

I love The Sopranos, and I look forward to seeing it through to the finale once again.

American Horror Story

Just about to finish season 1 which has been great! Reminds me of older horror, parts remind me of The Shining because of the living being in a place where ghosts are at the same time and the way they cross over. Also the maid, how she's seen as a younger woman but is actually an old fucker, reminds me of The Shining and the bathroom scene.
Also the stuff about wanting a baby and then planning to take the baby away from the mother and all that stuff, not the same but it did remind me a little of Rosmary's Baby.
So I guess this season was inspired by some good horror films, or themes just run close sometimes.

The back and forthing of SOA is beginning to wear on my credulity. Keeping a dozen plot twist balls in the air is a mighty hard task that the writers have done well with, but eh.... Supernatural is my all time favorite. They have left their own sandbox a time or two with so-so results but overall I like the inner logic. I am resisting watching it from the begining again until the series actually ends. Which it should be getting close to, lets not milk a good thing too long.
