View Full Version : What are you working on?

I know that some artists don't like to show or even talk about their work before it's finished, but also find it incredibly interesting to see raw images of work in progress and step by step development of ideas. Surprisingly enough, I started to become more comfortable with sharing unfinished pieces, which somehow only increases my curiousity of seeing other people's stuff.

I personally am not doing anything exciting at the moment. Most of you know me as a portrait artist, but in fact I am an aspiring interior designer. I studied the subject in high school and have been wanting to continue my studies at a university for quite some time now. So I ditched the portraits and started building an interior design portfolio. What I've done so far is sketches and models of my own furniture designs. I plan to do more of them and also complete projects of entire interiors. Here are a few images, should anyone be interested to see what I've been busy with:

http://i41.tinypic.com/2lih73a.jpg

Model of a chair, scale 1:10. Made out of cardboard, white finish.

http://i44.tinypic.com/m4gh5.jpg
Above and below: Sketches of another two chair designs. Yes, leg and high heel shoe fetish!

http://i41.tinypic.com/swed1e.jpg

http://i43.tinypic.com/15hlnpz.jpg

Model of the last design, scale 1:10 again. The frame is made of cardboard again, and so are the bases of the two seats, which on their behalf were upholstered with velvet. I totally ruined a cushion to do that, lol.

Anyway, feel free to share and discuss your ongoing projects if you like, I'm dying to see/hear what you all have been up to! :)

Awesome thread!
And nice work with the chair designs, I think the last one is brilliant! I like the simple line design in the first chair, nice to signature and avatar too!

Well I started to design a new website for my design work, but I torture myself over the design so much. I have probably 5 websites in pieces because before I finish one I get other ideas and start on something else. I have sketch books full of ideas, some of them I go back to and early last year I went back to a sketch which I used to make these in Photoshop.

These are some scans from the book, I don't expect anyone to understand the writing lol I just scribble and doodle so fast when I'm putting ideas down and no one was supposed to see these so they were just done for me to follow.
You can see the hospital bed on the first page, the other page has a small sketch of the other page I worked up.

http://www.alanpb.co.uk/apb_sk1.jpg

http://www.alanpb.co.uk/apb_sk2.jpg

The idea is that they will be in flash and it will have interactive parts. I want my twitter feed to push tweets through the letter box, I want music to play out of the head and some sort of video in the picture frame. But having this stage design I want the page transitions to be really cool like the backgrounds slide out and pieces fall flat, in a way stage props would act.

http://www.alanpb.co.uk/apb1.jpg

This page was probably going to be a contact page or links page or something, and again it would be in flash and have moving parts and stuff.

http://www.alanpb.co.uk/apb2.jpg

But then I abandoned this because I just didn't get into it, but actually I found these files a few weeks ago and sort of got excited about it. So might work on this a bit more, plus I paid for the stock images so it's sort of a waste of money if I don't use them somehow lol.

Thanks, Norse!

I really like your stuff too, or at least what I've seen from it- which is not much, so I'd be very interested in seeing your portfolio. I remember that signature of yours, with the playing cards coming out of Manson's mouth- that was very cool. The images you posted look awesome too- very Mansony! So yeah, that's all I have to say because I don't know anything about web design. Where did you graduate, by the way?

Norsefire
01-02-2012, 05:16 PM
Yeah I guess it is kind of Mansony in parts, other parts are inspired by the MCR Black Parade album art which made me look at old war photographs and stuff and that sort of thing. I've added some sketches there now, one page will feature a guy a gas mask on that which I used before for an old website but I wanted to keep it and improve on it and work it into this new site.... if I ever finish it.

I went to De Montfort University in Leicester. It was a terrible experience, the tutors were not interested in people doing website design which was something I was really interested in. They said the internet is not the way forward, and we had a small class where we had to design our portfolio's and one tutor who was really cool and really into design, she said people should look at doing a website but the rest of the tutors were dead against it and pretty much over ruled her.

To be completely honest I was put off design in my last year there because of the shitty attitude from the tutors and just overall lack of interest in design. If I didn't turn up I would of been in trouble, but I would turn up all the time and I wouldn't gain anything unless it was with the one tutor who was cool. It became very clear to me that Uni was all about them making money or at least that course seemed that way. I didn't feel that I gained anything in my final year at all, the course didn't teach me anything at all. I didn't even want to go to my graduation, I didn't even care at that point. I got the grade I aimed for so I should of been pleased but I couldn't care less about that, design or uni.

I wasn't alone in thinking all of that either, luckily I lived in a house with 3 friends on the same course so we could all show each other our work and get feedback from each other which was a million times more helpful than anything the tutors could say. I'm sure they were just old and stuck in the past and didn't like current world of design.

Cool sketches, thanks for sharing! I wish I could read your handwriting better, these kinds of notes are very interesting to me.

And it sucks you had such a bad experience at university. Actually, the reason I asked where you went is because I think you are very talented, so I thought maybe if your university had my subject, I'd consider applying for it. Either way, good for you for not letting shitty tuters stand in your way or put you off pursuing a career in design. Keep up the good work!

New project Im working on. Its called "Virgin". A huggy-bear is growing an Alien-fetus in its stomach..
And so the new Christ is born :P .. Whats in the text-bubble you wonder?.. It's in Danish, in English it says something like this:
- "If you become insane in an insane world, is it then a sign of good health?"

My first attempt at making something purely for profit: a latex halloween/horror mask:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/delashay/maskb.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/delashay/maska.jpg

I've put a few hours of sculpting into this, and so far the hardest part is making it look more gaunt and corpse like. The armature's thickness is making this look more like a cheesy Frankenstein/zombie creature, which isn't what I'm going for... but they do tend to sell better :/

Currently working on this t-shirt:

http://i39.tinypic.com/zl89j.jpg

Applied the first layer of paint not too long ago and probably will add a few more. White textile paint annoys the hell out of me for various reasons but I didn't have a plain white t-shirt to work on with black paint. :P

Been working on a few dilapidated surf boards to turn into decorations. The others are done and will be up on a website soon.

Here's one I'm working on now. It's being worked on.

The end result will include quite a bit of faux texturing with sponge brushes to look like moss and spray using a strip of cardboard as a gaurd yadda yadda to look like blood spatter. I know what I'm doing. You'll see.

Just this:

http://i41.tinypic.com/wrdtt1.jpg

Losing my patience pretty quick, don't think I've ever left a pencil portrait for the next day, always done them in one sitting. Copying photos is pretty boring also but I'm doing this as a present for someone. Experimenting with charcoal for the first time as well, it's in the hair. Awesome stuff, too bad my scanner is a fag.

necro, keep us updated on the progress of that mask by all means! It is disgusting and I want to touch it!

Wow, Necrospasms, that mask is looking incredible!

This is a large scale painting I am working on at the moment. The work is about the destruction of beauty and it's design is based upon Arabic geometric patterns. I have combined these patterns with my own painting style that focuses on translucency and layering. The following photographs show my studio space and the first three layers of outline and initial glazes of paint.

Thank you, Sans and [divine_infect]. I have been working in acrylics, however, I have considered doing the final coat with an oil based glaze.
It is it finished now. I plan to do two smaller works of the same height and a third of the width on either side in gold to frame it.
I apologise for the poor photo quality, I will put some better quality photographs in my own art thread once the artwork is properly installed.

@Adam - mhmm, this looks promising! Will you keep the lines as they are, or will there be some more sketching before/after coloring?

@Dismorphia - Oh I love how it came out! Blue is one of my favourite color [kinda] and all those shades are just so sweet for the eyes! It's a pretty way to show distruction of beauty. I hope you'll have the time to show of the other works in progress when you're on them. :)

And me... I'm doodling this... there's someone missing though. But I am too lazy to make another pic, my cam is an ass [it's the card actually, arrgh]

As for current projects, I'm not as self sufficient as the rest of you :P I'm currently working on a dubstep tribute film to Doctor Who (specifically the 11th Doctor because of the awesome cinematography and HD video) and a short horror story inspired a bit on Lovecraft's work. The story was intended to be just a short 400 - 500 word entry for Short 'n Scary Stories, but as I've progressed it's now over 1200 words and still only in the opening sequences. By the time it is finished I may have a very novella on my hands.

I've have been doing some ceramics work lately because I have been getting more interested in sculpture. Ceramics is not really something I am going to pursue but I am happy with this project so far. I have been slipcasting beetles and applying Japanese decals to them. I plan for the final work to be the beetles on top of some rusty looking geometric plinths.
