Haha, I also was going to put your name in the title with the feeling I knew you'd be going :P
I'm probably going to make a run through some western dates: Utah (if he comes), Vegas, California, Denver. Just have to see what dates get announced.

happy there's obviously some US dates on the horizon but why can't they just release all the dates in one tour announcement like most bands do? this one-by-one shit is kind of annoying. management and/or the record company must have these dates by now.... i plan on traveling to a couple of shows but planning shit would be a whole lot easier if i had a whole bunch of dates all at once to look at instead of just getting them one by one.

Is this a definite thing? I find it hard to believe that in the middle of a tour that is over sea's, he would stop by bum fuck iowa to play one show.... I know there are no other dates for May, so, May could be the U.S. month but I don't know... If it's true, put me down for a maybe. I'd be coming from Chicago...not sure how far it is from there.

i'm thinking there's *got* to be other U.S. dates. but if that is the only one by some chance, then i would definetely fly out for it.

Well, yeah...it just seems weird. Very small window of time. Like, not enough for a proper 30 date U.S. tour. Atleast to me. We'll see I guess. But I clicked that link and still didnt find anything.

For future reference, if it's a Manson concert and it's anywhere in the continental U.S. then everyone might as well go ahead and consider me CONFIRMED.

:)

I'd imagine it's just out of their hands and left up to the regional promoters.

I'd be coming from Chicago...not sure how far it is from there. This is just the first U.S. date to be announced. There's no reason to suspect that the entire U.S. tour will consist ONE date in Des Moines, lol.

Well, yeah...it just seems weird. Very small window of time. Like, not enough for a proper 30 date U.S. tour. Atleast to me. We'll see I guess. But I clicked that link and still didnt find anything. The window seems about right, actually. They've got the second-half of March, ALL of April, and then ALL of May to cover the U.S. before heading back to Europe for June. That's PLENTY of time to criss-cross the States even with days off for rest & relaxation along the way.

And let's not forget it's probably just a first run swing through the U.S. before a more elaborate second round of theater-sized venue shows in late-Fall/Winter/Spring. So I'm SURE we'll get a decent selection of domestic U.S. dates when it's all said and done.

Pure speculation, mind you...but that IS generally the way the band's tours work out.

any of those are doable for me, plus the pacific northwest, depending on the scheduling (middle of the week is not so good for me, needs to be on, just before or just after a weekend). plus i want to hit one or two east coast dates since i have family and friends out that way. again, depends on the scheduling of these dates.

I just returned from the Des Moines show... Here's the quick summary: Great atmosphere, great crowd (with a few idiots in between) and an absolutley amazing performance by Marilyn Manson.

Here are a few pictures that I have taken tonight...

THANKS so much! That's my golden-yellow Cub Scout bandanna around my right-wrist in every single one of those pix!

And for the "Antichrist Superstar" pic, that's Manson pointing down to my Holy Bible so a crew member would pick it up for him since I got knocked around while throwing it at his request and it hit the podium and dropped to the side instead. He got it handed up though and spent a little bit with it resting atop the podium and even tore pages out to wipe his brow with before tossing it into the crowd! He kinda miscalculated and it ricocheted off the rafters a bit before finding its new owner, lol.

He also enjoyed my flag again, too. WIN.

But the venue had some very problematic issues.

It was basically like watching a band play in a barn, although it certainly didn't look much like one from the outside. The acoustics were pretty awful for those of us right up front, at least, but I'm told it sounded MUCH better the closer listeners got to the "sweet spot" by the mixing board. So only the die-hards got screwed, i guess. Yay. The speakers on stage were mostly beside or even behind those of us right by the rail, so it was pretty hard to make out what Manson had to say between songs and finer points like that. Same goes for The Pretty Reckless. Taylor could belt it out as hard as she wanted but it was pretty much lost in the mix and audio sludge of the venue, at least towards the front.

Similarly, I initially thought this would be the first North American date to NOT start with the banner drop after I looked up early and noticed it was rolled-up and waiting in the rafters overhead and BEHIND us...but then the barricade security announced that we all had to be ready for it to unfurl before Manson's set so we could push it forward towards the stage to hang in its proper place on its way down.

But the REAL problem was the retarded set-up of the pit. The stage was about 5 feet from the barricade, but on the audience side of the barricade was a 2 foot "step" up from the rest of the pit. As if the people on the rail need to be ELEVATED, too! WTF. So basically we couldn't jump for fear of falling or flail much without our elbows hitting the people right behind us in their faces. Plus, people were CONSTANTLY trying to climb and mount those of us on the "step" while the people directly ON the rail were trying to push back at us to knock us off. I probably spent about the first half of the set with nothing but my toes on the "step" like a goddamned diving board, but the crowd pushing from behind was enough to keep me balanced nonetheless.

For a while, at least. Then I got pushed back from someone ahead of me RIGHT at the same time someone BEHIND me fell off the "step" and grabbed my shoulders and took me down with them. And that was that. Once you're off the "step" there's really no going back. And my front-and-center perfect view beforehand had quickly become a view of nothing but bouncers hauling people out from the center almost nonstop and blocking my view of the stage while people behind me kept trying to get me to help them out and/or notify the overworked staff to help them. Which I'm normally very helpful about but it was really killing the experience to spend song after song dealing with the nonstop flood of overweight Iowans just burly enough to think they could take the stifling and crushing pit conditions but also just lardassed and unleveragable enough to actually pick-up and pass overhead to finally get rid of the goddamned retards. I felt like some kind of pay-to-play conveyor belt for bovine fucktards for the bulk of the show, ffs. FUCK, YOU...I PAID FOR THIS SHIT. Enjoy the pit or find your OWN way out, goddamnit! Just stop getting in my way and piling your fat asses on me the WHOLE fucking time and harassing me to pick to pick you up when I weigh less than ONE of your fucking thighs! Argh.

Anyway, Manson started the show with a blackface-style ventriloquist dummy doll thing strapped to his left arm and was in top form, as usual. Not sure how new it is, but he also DEFINITELY has a Celebritarian cross shaved into his right temple. The merch booth added rubber bracelets with white-on-black MARILYN MANSON BORN VILLAIN text, 10 bucks each.

Oh, and Teena Byrd was there as she has been for several other shows so far. I saw a letter she'd given a crew member to give to Manson during the so-called "line-up" before the show and I'd thought it was a cell phone in his back pocket at the start of the show but it turned out to be her letter! He took a moment to pay tribute to her salacious and pornographic musings therein with Twiggy joining to help, but mostly just tossed it aside and plowed ahead. Or maybe not. Did I mention he was hard to hear between songs? Bah.

My pal Calculations caught a page which we'll share later, and he says HI, btw! As do feltpupil and her fiancee. Yayyyy, nice li'l roundup of former 'Phants tonight!

But, yeah, that "line-up" at the door was a problem, too. I was about 15th to arrive but there was no actual line, just an agglomeration of people by the doors. Sure enough, people just waded in and bumped the early arrivals. Then, even worse, the security divided the crowd into male/female lines right before entry, fucking up the proceedings even further. So I wound up something more like the 30th or 40th person to actually enter the venue! Fuck, I was there WAY too early for that shit! And with that retarded fucking "step" by the rail it made early entry even MORE crucial so you didn't end up dangling off the precipice the whole time. Had it gone more smoothly and correctly I'd have been RIGHT on the rail and utterly anchored but instead I was in the 2nd row behind the rail, right on the edge of that retarded fucking bastard of a "step." Ugh. Fucking HATE it.

ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS MOVE THE RAIL TWO FEET TOWARDS THE PIT AND THE WHOLE ISSUE WITH THE BANNER AND THE PIT WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY FUCKING SOLVED!!! Iowa is apparently full of fucking idiots, if you'll pardon the harsh generalization.

Anyway, the owners of the bowling alley across the street were kind enough to let me store my luggage there since the Greyhound stop had no lockers and the venue had no coat check despite the chill and Calcs and feltie took me to a ZOMBIE-THEMED burger bar which served my favorite booze, Chartreuse, and the show really fucking DID kick all kinds of ass, so all in all it was super awesome, but that's entirely without thanks to the venue itself, sadly. Which itself wasn't awful, just poorly managed and arranged. Frankly, they were over their heads and WAY out of their leagues for a show and a crowd like Manson's.

Anyway, popped another stitch and had a blast, so it's all good!

ON TO SIOUX FALLS!!!

:D

so....same setlist?

Yes, as far as I can remember the setlist was identical.

@ Hazekiah: I consider myself lucky that I must have been at the "sweet audio spot", because I thought the acoustics were phenomenal.
Other than that, I unfortunately have to agree with most of your points, even though I still appreciate all that noise, the audience created! And in fact you could see that Manson and the whole band had a lot of fun.

I have seen Manson perform in Dortmund, Germany in 2007 (which was also an absolutely amazing performance!!!) and in Dessel, Belgium in 2009. The show in Des Moines was hardly comparable to the other two, particulalry because of the size of the venue. I had a blast and a great time!

Hope Manson and Zombie will team up for a full Halloween Tour and will also have stop in the area around Chicago, Des Moines or Minneapolis...

Hazekiah
05-09-2012, 11:05 AM
Yeah, the setlist has been the same from the very first show up to the present, so far as I'm aware and can recall. It's a GREAT one, so no complaints there!

And I will say that the mix for Manson was superior to the mix for The Pretty Reckless. Just goes to show what a difference separate sound crews make on the same equipment, I suppose. But it was still pretty cavernous and muddy from right in the front for both shows, which was most likely due to the elongated, barnlike structure of the venue itself and no fault of the crews, of course.

Absolutely ZERO complaints about the crowd noise, btw! It was a lively bunch and I'm ALWAYS glad to hear everyone singing and screaming and cheering along! In THAT respect at least the crowd certainly kicked ass and gave the band PLENTY of energy to feed off of while they were blowing the roof off the venue.

And say what you will about her writings and videos, but it should be added to the discussion that Teena Byrd is a perfectly friendly and pleasant person to talk to in person and even suggested helpful hints about stashing luggage elsewhere before I tipped her off to the bowling alley instead. As far as I've seen, no matter how stressful her situation is or how rude people are being to her face and behind her back, she's still all smiles and good times and happy to be there and maybe just a little peculiar and overboard with her dedication to Manson now and then...but, hey, aren't we all sometimes?
