I went to the SSMF 2 years ago when The Smashing Pumpkins played and it was a blast. The set up is really sweet and it's all general admission so you can literally be right up front if you get to the stage early enough. For those who haven't been, I highly reccomend going to this if you have the funds. $75 is a little steep but in my opinion it's kind of worth it. And the Offspring? That would be a TON of fun! Checking out all the smaller bands at the clubs is really fun, too.

I'd be interested in going if other's will be attending. Would anyone be interested in setting up a meetup for this? Since this Manson/Zombie tour hasn't been confirmed yet, this may be LAs only chance to see MM this Summer!

As a side note, this show should be a bit extra special since this year SSMF will be honoring The Doors and, according to the festival description, each band will be playing some Doors covers. I'm not sure if MM has played it live in the past, but hearing their take on Five to One is very likely.

It would great if Manson sang some Doors since he's such a fan of Jim Morrison.

Working out logistics as we speak. Do you know really what the difference on the vip tickets? Would only do it if it gave better seating, but figure $75 ain't bad for all those bands. Plus, bands jamming Doors tunes - I'm so down. Probably going to drive out Friday really early out of SLC, I've done a 12hr drive before, and would want to get in Friday evening to check it/drink.

I'm definitely going. I've been wanting to check out this festival regardless...having Manson headline, there's no way I wouldn't go!

And I would be interested in meeting up too.

Heading out one way or another, planting myself down in front of the main stage as early as possible. Fuck the rest of the festival.

I'm going to try and get my ticket this week, I've looked at plane tickets but think I could manage cheaper just driving. Has anyone figured out their staying arrangements out there? I'd be down to thrown in on a room somewhere, even if it's just for floor space. I'm like a dog in that respect lol

AssetReign

^ You'd better book rooms as soon as you can because they're going to be in short supply. Unless a group of you are willing to throw in together and spring for one of the upscale hotels in the area.

AssetReign
06-26-2012, 08:24 PM
^ That's probably your best bet. I'm sure the most requested room is going to be room 32 at the Alta Cienega Motel because that's where Morrison lived from '68-'70. It's a dive and for sure they'll be jacking up the price for the event.

Well, I'm truly glad that you guys had a great night - it's still nice to see Manson with The Doors and I'm sure the music was great. I guess it was only a 30 second clip or whatever but I really hope he did better on the other songs because he wasn't singing in key once in those 30 seconds that I saw.

Cringeon
08-19-2012, 02:03 AM
Love Me clip is definitely in key, MM's pitch is right in with Ray. Can't wait for more videos, dying for Five to One!

AssetReign
08-19-2012, 02:11 AM
Robby was wearing what looked like pajama bottoms, and kicking ass. Ray was incredible. It was epic.

I also meant to say, despite everyone complaining about him singing the same songs all the time, the loudest roars from the crowd came whenever he started in with one of the more familiar songs, like Sweet Dreams.

Oh my FUCKING GOD! WHAT A SHOW!

What an awesome day and one of Manson's best shows, number 9 for me. In October it will the big 10. 3 Doors covers were great! Very cool to see keyboards during those songs!! So lucky to see 2 of the original Doors members perform with my favorite rockstar and one of the very few real rock stars in the music scene.

I NEVER screamed so loud in my life out of excitement... I screamed "FUCK YEAH" like 10 times and my lungs hurt from it... wow say what you want but Manson is the only band that actually makes me go fucking crazy and happy... sure there's a 1,000 bands out there, but what can I say? Obsessed? NO. Spiritually connect musically? YES. Cigarettes and screaming as loud as I can... hurts.

Maybe it was just the camera or sound quality but that performance of Five to One was really awful sounding on Manson's part. His screams sound terrible these days, the song doesn't call for them in the first place, and everything else he was mumbling. Really. That's pretty disappointing. Any People Are Strange footage?

Norsefire
08-19-2012, 07:10 AM
It's recorded on a phone, hoping some nice footage with better audio surfaces soon. But for now this is pretty awesome to watch.

1984
08-19-2012, 07:14 AM
I thought that Five To One wasn't bad - there were parts where he was all over the shop and it was pissing me off but that first scream he did at the beginning was great and it made me shit my pants. Imagine waking up to that at 4am when you are fast asleep in bed. Definitely better then what he was doing for Love Me Two Times.

Cringeon
08-19-2012, 07:56 AM
Go by the word of your peers, and all those who went. Everyone has said they fucking nailed it. Shoddy youtube videos aren't going to impress anyone who's out to be critical.

1984
08-19-2012, 07:59 AM
I know A LOT is left to the imagination when watching this stuff, and I am honestly not as cynical as I make myself out to be online, but yeah - you can hear parts in that video where he is clearly not singing and is just 'making noises'. A lot of my peers on here would say Manson was amazing even if they were attending the Rock Am Ring gig in 2009 so I do have cause to be skeptical here. Hell. Some of my peers in here actually think THEOL is a good album, so whatever dude.

crowded_morgue
08-19-2012, 08:25 AM
It all sounds amazing! Five to One should just become part of Manson's set for the rest of the year. This show would've been fucking great to see in person! It's like a grand finale of this tour before Twins of Evil begins. Hope to see a full vid of Love Me Two Times soon.

1984
08-19-2012, 08:43 AM

It may inspire him to actually put it on the set list for Twins of Evil - here is hoping!

It definitely was a great night. Took some one to their first Manson show and she loved it. The biggest reaction from me was when Diary of a Dope Fiend was teased, followed by a brief pause and talk to the audience that went into The Dope Show. The ending was an abortion, though. Sounded like they were going to perform Murderers . . . , but they just slowly got off the stage with Jason tossing what looked like to be a bass head into the crowd and a few drum sticks. Manson sounded slightly drink in between songs, yet the songs came off well, and like AssetReign said, the biggest crowd reaction came when Sweet Dreams was performed.

Was it the best Manson show I've been to? No, but it will still be memorable as it was my big 1 0.

1984
08-19-2012, 09:53 AM
Thanks for the honesty, Shattered. Even though it wasn't the best time you had seen him, it'll definitely be the ONLY time you will ever see him play with The Doors and that is pretty fucking incredible man.

Shattered Dream
08-19-2012, 10:00 AM
^I'm just an honest person. Manson did sound drunk when he was rambling to the crowd, but the songs were good. There were a a couple of sketchy points, but it is true, I'll never see him/them perform with Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek ever again. I did want some more, but I knew it was a festival type setlist, and the three songs with The Doors cut things short. Definitely surprised that Slo-Mo-Tion wasn't played.

yeah, i noticed that too. i was all like, FINALLY they aren't ending the show with "The Beautiful People" like they have for the last 100 years or so and i was looking forward to hearing more shit and then they....just left. Or from where i was it looked like the band was ready to do something and then Manson just upped and left. Bit of a letdown with that, but should have known better, lol.

Loved the whole Doors thing and really feel privileged to have witnessed it because as you said, this is something that probably won't ever happen again. Too bad i didn't bring my pro camera -- the search going into the venue wasn't all that thorough and i probably could have gotten it in :-/

Maybe it was just the camera or sound quality but that performance of Five to One was really awful sounding on Manson's part. His screams sound terrible these days, the song doesn't call for them in the first place, and everything else he was mumbling. Really. That's pretty disappointing. Any People Are Strange footage?

BULLSHIT!

Like I said before, I'm genuinely glad you guys had a good night but he seemed to have butchered some of my favorite songs by one of my all time favorite bands....

Kollaps, I truly don't see where he's ruining the song. He's just 'adding' his style to it, it doesn't mean he's ruining it. You know a song he ruined? Iron man. But these 3 right now? Nope.

I loved them all, but Love Me Two Times and Five To One were the best to me. I'm downloading them at 1080p right now.

don't think it sounds that bad, at least he doesn't sound that bad. the music is somewhat anemic, but I put most of the blame for that on the two old men still trying to be rock stars. as far as Manson's voice, I've heard some pretty goddamn horrific shit from him and these recordings don't even come close to that level of poor.

also, just have to say that it's a fucking joke to refer to Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek as "The Doors."

I don't think it is really that much of a joke to say that about the main songwriters of the band... They are good dudes, pioneers and remarkable musicians. As much as The Doors died with Jim, they still deserve that title when jamming together. I don't think playing at a festival that is dedicated to a band that you were in like 50 years ago is really 'trying to be a rock star'. I'm pretty sure that is just actually being one.

Can't tell if agreeing with me or not.

I agree to the extent that where there is sloppyness, and where there's been sloppyness throughout this tour, that that's something that I enjoy. Even the way the songs are being performed, especially between Manson and Twiggy, there's a looseness and grittyness that I think is badass. They really should release a live album for this tour.

The audio that's surfaced so far doesnt do any justice to the awesomeness of his performance with the Doors.
It was a great show [#19 for me], though the ending seemed disconnected as others have mentioned. Manson seemed drunk but i didnt feel it affected his vocal performance.
A lot of fans I talked to were really looking forward to Slo-mo-tion, so it was a downer that it wasnt on the set. The Murderers teaser gave me hope I'd hear it again, but no go, To emphasize on peoples appreciation for Sweet Dreams, Jason was killin it on the drums during that song.

I'll post pictures [and depending on the video quality that too] later.

As mentioned before, the sloppiness of some of what he does really puts a great spin to the shows lately. I thoroughly feel it fits him more now than ever before. It's straight up rock and roll played with your cock above all else. Performing in the only fashion real rockstars know how.

Based on everyone's take, of those actually in attendance, looks like it was a killer performance overall. Fuck yeah.

http://www.artistdirect.com/entertainment-news/article/live-review-marilyn-manson-the-offspring-steve-aoki-and-more-at-the-sunset-strip-music-festival/10229831

"Marilyn Manson personifies everything the world loves about the Sunset Strip.

He's the kind of gritty maverick who could've risen out of one of Hollywood's gutters to become a star in the '80s. He's got the panache. He's got the look. He's got the vitriol. Even though he's not properly from Los Angeles (who is anyway?), he lives here now, and he should be the mayor.

Given how connected he is to L.A., it made sense for him to close out the Sunset Strip Music Festival, and he brought a level of sonic excess that'd make Jim Morrison and Axl Rose equally proud.

As soon as the curtain dropped, Twiggy churned out the tense and choppy riff to "Hey, Cruel World..." from Born Villain. Clad in an a propos leather jacket, Manson stood with his back to the crowd moaning with verse with haunting panache before turning around with a scream on the death march hook. It proved to be a fitting opening to his dirty, devilish, and divine headline set to Saturday's street fest. He prefaced a rousing "Disposable Teens" from Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) by talking about recording in the location of Californication "with the help of my brother, not biologically thankfully…Twiggy". More than ever, the duo remained a potent yin-and-yang with Twiggy's airtight thrashing and Manson's hypnotic screams cycling together in the perfect storm.

"The Love Song" stood out with its grimy bombastic beat and searing guitars as Manson asked, "Do you love your gun?" The audience chanted along to the Antichrist Superstar with unmitigated power.

Matching those masterpieces from Holy Wood, "No Reflection" snapped with a sinisterly slick hook as Manson waved his knife-microphone in tandem with headbanging. "mOBSCENE" and "The Dope Show" resounded with overwhelming energy as Manson explained before "Rock Is Dead" that "The Doors already said it before I said it".

"Pistol Whipped", with its sexy groove and S&M charm, fit snugly with "Sweet Dreams" just before the closing surprise of Ray Manzarerk and Robby Krieger of The Doors dropping by for eerie industrial-fused metal covers of "People Are Strange", "Love Me Two Times", and "Five To One". Massive sing-a-longs commenced along with the gasps of excitement. Appropriately, "Beautiful People" practically ruptured a hole in the streets at the end.

Manson exerted the same effect on rock 'n' roll that the legends before him did, and he's still ripping it a new one with every album. The Sunset Strip will never be the same now that he's left his mark…

Right before that storm began, The Offspring gave the packed audience a high-energy set that exploded on impact. Frontman Dexter Holland commented with a wide smile, "This crowd looks like they're read to go fucking apeshit here."

They went more than fucking apeshit as soon as the band launched into a propulsive "All I Want". Noodles's surf guitar belied the punk power of "Come Out and Play" as the audience bounced in tandem with the immortal hook.

"Days Go By", the title track of the group's latest offering, matched the intensity and infectiousness of the early material, while "Slim Pickens Does the Right Thing and Rides the Bomb to Hell" encapsulated their roots perfectly while dropping in a searing solo from Noodles. The grind of "Bad Habit" and "Gotta Get Away" made the streets sweat even more. Orange County invaded L.A. and emerged victorious this time around.

At the other end of the festival, Steve Aoki rocked the decks for a hand-waving set befitting of the Sunset Strip's legacy of bombast. The LED screen behind him blazed as brilliantly as the music and he masterfully worked the stage, never ceasing his movement.

Once again from Manson's potent metallic punishment to Aoki's blissful dance party, the Sunset Strip Music Festival proves to be one of the most eclectic and best fests out there, honoring the area's history and its future.

I'll upload video footage as soon as I can. I still owe some uploads to the May 2012 Milwaukee thread. And I think San Antonio..

So you're saying that the fact that he can't shout/scream anymore is a good thing? From what I'm watching on this video, he can barely perform. And his sloppy vocals makes me want to puke.

I'm really tired of hearing age as an excuse as well. Iggy Pop is still going hard and that guy has probably eaten more drugs and drank more piss then Marilyn Manson has even seen.

I'm like the most critical person ever I'm not really seeing anything nearly as terrible in those videos as you guys are claiming

The Love Song, etc, was fine - it's just The Doors performances that, in my opinion, were horrendous.

^The audio from the three videos that were posted are horrible, but Manson didn't sound too great singing Love Me Two Times as it seems that he didn't know the lyrics, and his timing seemed slightly off during Five To One.

Don't forget David Bowie. However, I don't see his performance of The Door's songs as a bad one.

I couldve sworn I saw someone placing lyrics sheets before the doors set, for Manson.

I wasnt that excited to hear Love me Twice [but really should be excited for any new songs Manson performs], and actually feel it was the best of the three.

Dont rely on the footage thats surfaced so far to base your claims that he sounded awful. My non SLR digital camera took clearer video/sound than whatever the uploader of those vids took.
[I'll upload them by the end of the week. Full disclosure: I didnt completely film Five TO One as i stupidly wanted to enjoy it by not experiencing it behind an LCD screen. It'l be worth the wait for the alternate angle/zoom-ins, etc. But its not the most fantastic footage either..But sortof..]

However some people just like to incessantly complain. Its one thing if you were there and heard it for yourself but youre listening to a recording of something, theres bound to be distortion.

I honestly didnt feel it was the best show i've seen him perform, of the six I've seen this year, but it was still awesome and something I'm glad I witnessed.

Don't forget David Bowie.

David Bowie has had fairly serious health issues for the past 4 or 5 years. Reports range from heart attack to stroke.

I'd love to see Bowie tour, but I guess it probably wont ever happen now with his health. :(

No, no. I only jest. I'm a huge Bowie fan, I'm particularly fond of the work he did with Brian Eno.

I'm OK with relying on live footage, and not people who have their lips stuck to Manson's butt hole. I'm also totally cool with giving my opinion as a fan even though I wasn't at the festival. Some people at concerts are just intoxicated, tone deaf, followers, stupid, in awe of the bright lights, smoke, snow, podium, and Manson's cute happy face ... etc. ... etc. There's also bound to be distortion at concerts too. So the argument that "oh well how can it be bad if everyone at the concert was going ape shit?" is a pretty lame excuse for poor vocal performances.

Anyways,

Bad quality Youtube videos or not, you can totally tell that some of Manson's performances were terrible. He just sounds tired and monotone. Yeah, he can scream. Whoo hoo ... "Antichrist Superstar," "Pistol Whipped," "Personal Jesus," "mOBSCENE," "People Are Strange," and "Love Me Two times" were fucking awful. "The Dope Show," and "Sweet Dreams" were ... OK ... the Californication wrap-up party was way better. "Hey, Cruel World," "No Reflection," and "The Love Song," were probably the only performances that were semi-decent.

And just on that, people pump their fists at Limp Bizkit concerts and I am pretty sure they are a fucking terrible, terrible band.

Sunset Strip Music Festival: Saturday with Cherry Bomb, Black Label Society, The Offspring and Marilyn Manson
http://thelosangelesbeat.com/2012/08/sunset-strip-muisc-festival-saturday-with-cherry-bomb-black-label-society-the-offspring-and-marilyn-manson/

I happened on to the Strip in the mid-afternoon among many eager participants who were hitting either the Jack Daniel drinking area, cruising the boulevard or seeking another club to duck into out of the heat. I gave the strip the once over twice as I customarily do all place I review. In that process I ran into Mini Marilyn and his “Free Pussy Riot” posse. It’s nice to know that protest is still alive. . . Set up for the Marilyn Manson stage must have been a bear. There were calls for all the volunteers to come up to the stage. I could the roadies struggle with hoisting the black scrim and scurrying frantically to get all the necessary cables to the right place and get them plugged in. But the show must go on! I struck a conversation with the drummers Mother while David Duchovny drifted in and out of view from the backstage. The fans were fanatical to say the least. As the stage work was nearing completion for the arrival of Manson’s show you could feel the pressure of the people moving forward packing everyone like sardines. Then came the silence and anticipation for a long awaited performance. Manson hasn’t been touring for the last three years. So a madhouse was about to be unleashed.
The scrim dropped and it was on! Manson ran the stage! Moving agilely to the front in classic Manson gear. He had a special goggled black skull mask while laying deep into the song “Hey Cruel World” with blistering fervor. The fans responded! They were frenetic, committed and waving their freak flags. It was mania I tell you, crazy damn mania! Sans the mask he moved on through “Disposable Teen”, “No Reflection” and “mOBSCENE”. The crowd response to “No Reflection” was huge! In between songs he’d chronicle his various intrigues over the last few years. He talk about getting high a lot. Suggesting that the audience was likely high. I saw no evidence of it in my corner, but surely someone was in the crowd was high. I guess this was all leading to the “Dope Show”. Everything progressed nicely with Depeche Mode cover “Personal Jesus” and Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams”. Much to my surprise came the appearance of Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger to do three Doors classics. While my Classic Rock friends have recoiled in horror at this event I haven’t found it difficult to take in knowing what I know. “People Are Strange” seems to be a perfect fit for Manson and while he’s no Jim Morrison, his vocals echoed where the Doors were coming from. It was a solid tribute. I know from my conversations with Ray that he’s always game to engage music in a contemporary manner, forever giving such classic music a new twist. It also introduced the Doors’ relevant material to a new generation. We Punks, for what it’s worth, held on to the Doors and Jimi Hendrix as archetypes form the previous generation of what innovation and creativity should sound like. I felt this was a fitting tribute to share the Doors music to a new generation in a way they could grasp.

At the end Manson didn’t fluff it! He stayed true to his core values and aesthetic. His encore were both “Antichrist Superstar” and “The Beautiful People”. This sent the crowd into a full on meltdown. Sending the SSMF off with the appropriate fireworks to end a festival and with the right measure of style to launch Marilyn Manson’s first tour in three years. It was a day great of music.

So that's my excerpted footage. It was ridiculously shaky so I went ahead and tried out YouTube's new stability enhancement feature with notably increased steadiness as well a tripped-out dreamlike quality as a pleasant side-effect. Big improvement over the grand-mal-seizures-in-an-earthquake feel of it otherwise. Wish my footage could have been better but if you're not high at a Doors show then ur doing it rong, lol.

But, hey, I got the setlist!

Kinda weird that it doesn't allot time for "Five to One"...guess we got lucky. It's one of my all time favorite Manson covers, really would've been bummed if we didn't get that. Cool to hear them doing it so much closer to the original version, too! Ray and Robbie were fucking awesome, of course. Such an amazing treat to see them with Manson!

And that's my ticket with a bunch of flyers below the setlist pix. The flyers were for an artist who was selling original paintings of musicians -- two of Manson, pix forthcoming -- at a VIP lounge selling high-end cars and booze, which I happily discovered required a yellow wristband to enter and which I just so happened to have somewhere in the stacks of concert bracelets I keep on my wrist. Ha! Victory.

And, lastly, that's a piece of red confetti with them. I thought I saw that one of the other bands had used heart-shaped confetti at the fest, like Manson used to use, but then I picked it up off the street and realized it was all just...leaf-patterned confetti? Seems weirdly ironic, but w/e. Rape of the world, indeed! Anyway, I saved tons of Manson's confetti, too.

Great show. Definitely worth the trip!

:)

From what I saw from my vantage point, everyone was having a great time. Even Duchovny was a little star struck.
