Not sure how well the Skinny Puppy side of influence Manson broods over but I was watching some retro SP videos today and I found something interesting.

Are we all familiar with the prop tree with the hanged ventriloquist dummies on the branches during the Smells like Children Tour? Look below for the only photo I could find worth seeing (the dummies are above Twiggy, the top left corner).

Now watch this video of a Skinny Puppy concert performance from their 1992 Last Rights Tour. One of the more well used props of theirs during this time frame was a giant tree with branches that hung fake coprses, meat, gas masks and heads from the limbs. Unlike Manson, Ogre spun the tree's branches around during performances. here is some cited info on it.

The stage show of its accompanying tour (North America, 1992) was built around a detailed narrative that involved Ogre interacting with a backing film, a "virtual reality" machine, a bleeding crucifix, and a large, rotating device called "The Tree of No Cares" from which dangled severed heads and pornographic magazines.See a composite sketch by clicking here: http://home.earthlink.net/~coreygoldber ... s/tree.jpg (http://home.earthlink.net/%7Ecoreygoldberg/lastrights/sketches/tree.jpg)

Look at at this live performance below:

I'm sure this has probably been mentioned before but from the scene in Blue Velvet

Nice spot, I think that might have been discussed at The Heirophant, but it would have been years ago, so it's nice to have it revised. And it's one of those examples where I feel it is absolutely implicit, no speculation needed. Obviously Manson and David Lyynch worked together, so there would be an influential exchange there anyway, but I think the Sweet Dreams mic light is an absolute proliferation, especially in relation to the film's narrative and the themes of the song.

It also ties in nicely with the Frank Booth imagery I mentioned in Crotchless Wheel Chairs? last week.

It does tie in nicely with the Frank breathing mask parallel! And you're right the lyrics of sweet dreams and themes of Blue Velvet really do go hand in hand.

Well I think there is that, relative to the themes of use and abuse, which are commented on during The High End of Low as well.

As always, nice spotting, S.D.

This is just a little thing really, and although it's old and I've seen it a hundred times it only just clicked in my head. Strapping Young Lad, Love?:

there's a really quick shot at the 1 minute mark, and others at the 2:00 and 2:30 marks that remind me of Manson's "lightbulb mic", first used in the Sweet Dreams video and in various incarnations in live shows since.

The lightbulb mics are quite similar, it also makes me think of the one used in The Agonist's Business Suits and Combat Boots video.

I am not saying that this was intentional but the soft focus of Mason's newest photo shoot by Ashley Walters reminds me of the soft focus photography often employed by Andres Serrano. The particular artwork it reminds me of is Madonna and Child II.

Ha, yes. Forgot about that one. I was not exactly paying attention to the microphone in that video, you understand. For clarity, this is the video Dysmorphia was talking about:

And yes, I can see the relation to Serrano there.
