View Full Version : Song lyrics in live performances of Lunchbox 2015

When I saw Manson in Raleigh NC a few weeks ago during Lunchbox he sang lyrics from "the end" by the Doors. I have recordings of this show and the Concord CA tour opener and during that show he sang lyrics from Nirvana's "Rape Me" during the same part. I also saw a setlist from NJ that said Lunchbox had lyrics from Jay Zs holy grail.

I was wondering if he picked a different song every night during this tour. If anyone remembers what they were I would be interested to know which other song lyrics he used...

He switched it up on the fly. Some times I think he did Five to One as well, Cake and Sodomy, Holy Grail, The End, Rape Me, possibly a Pumpkins song. Really whatever he wanted lol

That's cool I will have to try to find some of the other ones. Lunchbox was the best part of the show for me. I enjoyed the added lyrics from "the end". Mostly because it was the same lyrics from the song that Gibby Haynes used to use as an intro to the song Sweat Loaf when it was played live and I'm a huge bhs fan.

Rape Me

Anyone know which show(s) that was?

I remember him doing Come As You Are during Lunchbox, but Rape Me was mainly before he played Angel With the Scabbed Wings.

Come As You Are

Source?

Also, song titles are to be wrapped in quotation marks, while album titles are supposed to be italicized/underlined. Still trying to commit these rules to memory myself.

E.g. Marilyn Manson singing Nirvana's "Come As You Are" from their 1991 album Nevermind.

Thanks, that was a lot more underwhelming than I expected.

Maybe this was a bad night, but he sounds really quite terrible doing this song. Rushed and out of breath incoherent yelling is not singing. There are plenty of songs he could have added to the setlist that he could have even attempted to begin to enunciate and sing properly. It's not really a video quality thing before anyone throws that out, it's just a fundamental inability to physically handle singing relatively 'fast.'

I was wondering this myself. Does anyone happen to know what he said during the Boston show (July 28) and the Toronto show (Aug. 4)? I couldn't make out what he was saying either time.

I read on setlist.fm he also did a bit of “Mother” by Pink Floyd

I can help identify a bunch of the tidbits he sang for shows I filmed once I get home, fwiw.

But in the meantime it's worth noting that he also sang "King Kill 33°" at least once and "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking Heads! Haven't seen those mentioned anywhere but they were AWESOME! Can't wait to upload 'em!

XD

Here's my halfassed footage of it! I'll upload it for real when I get home but this'll have to do till then.

Oh, and it was Jay-Z's "Holy Grail" with a bit of him just talking about he and Twiggy being "blood brothers for life," btw.

Thanks for your input! I would like to hear the ones with kk33 and once in a lifetime...on a side note the pumpkins used to do a pretty interesting cover of once in a life time around when machina came out.

Interesting...yet another song they should've done together, lol.

And thank YOU for starting the thread, btw! It's a topic I'm interested in myself and ideally I'd love to see a complete list of ALL the songs Manson's referenced during "Lunchbox." It's obviously a pretty cool list with quite a bit of variety and diversity, after all.

Speaking of which, I'm still not home yet so I can't post my footage of each just yet (although I certainly will later!), but I finally had a couple days off between shows and went through a bunch of my End Times footage yesterday. Here's what I've got so far...

LAS VEGAS: "Fuck This Game" by Cage and "Cake and Sodomy"

RED ROCKS: "Fuck This Game" by Cage and "King Kill 33°"

BOSTON: "Holy Grail" by Jay-Z and "Straight Outta Compton" by N.W.A.

HOLMDEL: "Five to One" by The Doors

JONES BEACH: "Holy Grail" by Jay-Z and "The End" by The Doors

MASHANTUCKET: "Fuck This Game" by Cage and "Rape Me" by Nirvana

CAMDEN: "Holy Grail" by Jay-Z

CINCINNATI: "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking Heads

NASHVILLE: "Cake and Sodomy"

And just to clarify, Manson didn't actually sing "Cake and Sodomy" in Nashville, he just spent the whole breakdown in the middle of "Lunchbox" splattering his blood all over his face while Twiggy and Dan played the bassline and "white trash" sample from "Cake and Sodomy." Likewise, at several other shows Manson was seemingly freestyling and ad libbing what may later turn out to be lyrics covered from other artists which I haven't been able to hear well enough and/or identify yet. Time will tell, I hope!

Oh, and I also filmed Phoenix but I used a different, older camera and technical difficulties are preventing me from reviewing the footage at the moment, so I'll have to get back to you about that show and whatever else I can figure out from the others later.

Anyway, there you go!

I think I understood some small parts of it:

Yeah, I got the same parts approximativly, but I can't say if he's singing something, like in all the other meddleys, or if he's just talking about something else.

Same thing in Dallas, what do you hear? Is he singing or just talking? Do you recognize the song?

It sounds more like he's ad libbing the opening verses of "Once In A Lifetime" - "And I think to myself, why didn't I shoot up my own school?"

Trés strange. That Manson - what a card!

And in this Camden performance?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-YB8Npp5Us
There are some parts of Holy Grail but some other things too.

By the way, does someone has a recording of the Mashantucket performance?

Fun fact: he doesn't always sing the same parts of the songs. When singing The End, the more we go in the tour, the more he changes the lyrics to add his own ironic comments.

That is Camden and that's me with the multicolored bracelets and black gloves filming him right in front of his face during the whole episode with the little girl, lol. And it's just "Holy Grail" and him being chatty there, btw.

And, yeah, despite some serious problems with venue security I filmed (most of) the Mashantucket show and that night he did "Fuck this Game" by Cage and "Rape Me" Nirvana. Click back a page, I posted a list of all the songs he did during "Lunchbox" at the 10 End Times shows I filmed.

Update: I found two new songs he covered.

In Dallas, there was parts of Fuck This Game too.

In Toronto, he sang parts of Time of the Season by The Zombies.

In Chicago, he sang parts of Harley David (Son of a Bitch) by the Bollock Brothers, and a very free cover of the End.

Now my main problem is to recognize what he sang in the Santa Ana performance (see video link above). I heard some parts of Straight Outta Compton ( the "Niggaz with attitude" part) but except that, I don't know. If someone wants to help...

Thanks a lot for that Haz!

I listened carefully and I can complete with a few precisions:

- I had a hard time trying to recognize which part of Straight Outta Compton he was singing. Actually, he's just singing some memories of it and it's really far from the real song. You can hear something starting like: "Straight Outta Compton!/ THree niggaz with attitude/ Big dicks...". THere's nothing like this in the song, of course. I'd like to know more precisely what he's saying, but I can't understand and english is not my first language, so help would be appreciated if someone wants to.

- The most complete version of Holy Grail is the Camden one.

- I confirm that he sings Time of the Season, from The Zombies, in Toronto, and Harley David (Son of A Bitch) from The Bollock Brothers in Chicago.

- Actually, he did NOT cover Talking Head's Once in a lifetime in Cincinatti. You can listen to the recordings (link above in this thread). Here is what he's singing:
"And I think to myself... why not shoot up my own school?"
It's an obvious reference to school shootings, but we are very far from Once in a lifetime lyrics. If it's supposed to be a reference, take a look at Sticky Fingaz's WOnderful world, which parody Armstrong's Wonderful World with an explicite reference to trenchcoat kids doing school shootings.

- Last but not least, I still cannot say what he's singing during the Santa Ana performance.

Glad to help! Sorry again for all my massive delays in here. I'd participate more (and still have PLENTY more footage to share!) but technical problems and constant travel make it difficult to do so in a timely and/or comprehensive manner, unfortunately.

On a related note, I'll have to provide full transcriptions later, but he is DEFINITELY covering "Straight Outta Compton" in my Boston footage above. Specifically, he's riffing off the lyric, "straight outta Compton, crazy mothafucka called Ice Cube from a band called Niggaz Wit Attitude," except he sings "straight outta Compton, Twiggy with an attitude" then adds some bits about "big dicks swingin' in your face now" and his WOW tattoo while comparing wrist tattoos with him and proclaiming them to be "blood brothers for life, blood brothers for life."

All of which I was already pretty sure was an allusion to Easy-E's A.I.D.S.-related death and Twiggy & Manson's occasional sucking of each other's cocks even BEFORE checking out your link to the Santa Ana performance!

Which, needless to say, is an EVEN MORE blatant example of the same thing, lol.

In Santa Ana he starts by taunting some guy in the crowd about his hat and putting it on some girl and fucking her later, stops himself from accidentally singing the old chant-along, cheerleader bit from the midsection back in the day, and eventually launches into "Straight Outta Condom" before likewise reminiscing about he a Twiggy sucking each other off, lololomfg.

None of which constitutes a PRECISE cover of the song, of course...but it's clear which song he's playing around with and therefore still counts as a cover, albeit a highly customized one, as far as I'm concerned.

Same goes for the cover of "Once in a Lifetime" by the Talking Heads in Cincinnati, btw!

Again, it's clear that he's improvising around the structure of those particular songs during a midsection break used for the express purpose of freestyling off-the-cuff lyrics from whatever songs he chooses to cover at that point on any given night, so I see no reason to NOT include "Straight Outta Compton" and "Once in a Lifetime" as examples of the same phenomenon.

Thanks again for that list of links, btw!

Cannot WAIT to dig through and transcribe all of them.

Thanks a lot Hazekiah!
Sorry for the misunderstanding, but as I said earlier, english is not my first language so I need a good quality to be sure of what I've heard. I'm sure you'll do a much better work than me. I'm eager to see what you'll show up ;)

Hazekiah

My pleasure!

And I had a few minutes to dig through some more of the links you posted, so I focused on these...

I think we should focus on the one not confirmed yet:
Irvine
Dallas
Boston (I trust you Hazekiah, but I can't recognize which part of the song he's singing and I'd like to have the lyrics to know if he's changing them or not)
Toronto
Chicago
Santa Ana

Irvine might be a VERY loose cover of Easy E's "Trust No Bitch," especially considering Manson referencing "Straight Outta Compton" on at least two occasions during the same part of the song....plus, y'know, unprotected sex, A.I.D.S., and Manson & Twiggy blowing each other back in the day, lol.

For Dallas, I don't really hear anything from "Fuck This Game," just Manson singing something about "close your eyes and bow your heads, close your eyes if you feel it," etc. Given how much he references Nirvana and rap artists, my best guess would be that it's either a VERY loose cover of "Burden in my Hand" by Soundgarden or "Prayer" by Rick Ross. Or maybe just Manson thinking out loud, I guess? Who knows.

Boston I'm 100% certain was "Holy Grail" and "Straight Outta Compton."

Toronto was "Time of the Season" by The Zombies, as you know.

Chicago was "Harley David (Son of a Bitch)," which is actually a song by Serge Gainsbourg...but Manson sings it in English instead of French and their lyrics are different from the best translation I could find, So, yeah, it seems like he's doing the version by The Bollock Brothers instead. And, of course, his freestyling version of "The End."

Lastly, Santa Ana was mostly Manson taunting the audience and throwing in a loose version of "Straight Outta Compton" while he toyed around with Twiggy.

Anyway, just another quick, little update.

Really looking forward to hearing the rest!

:)

So, first of all, plz allow me the privilege of solving the mystery regarding exactly wtf Manson sang during "Lunchbox" during the Mashantucket, CT show!

As you may have already heard, that wasn't EXACTLY the best venue for a show like his (http://www.providermodule.com/forum/showthread.php/7554-x083-Aug-02-2015-Susquehanna-Bank-Center-Camden-New-Jersey-USA?p=196863&viewfull=1#post196863), but I rolled with it and improvised the best I could and THIS is what I got. I'll post the raw data in the thread for the show itself later, but for demonstration purposes, here it is, "stabilized" for your viewing pleasure; "Lunchbox" plus "Fuck This Game," "The End," and "Rape Me," w00t:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxvMxTUiVM8

And then the OTHER video!!!

OMFG.

So there I was, front-and-center on the rail and filming Manson, when I suddenly felt the familiar sensation of someone behind me trying to climb up and over me from the pit. But Manson was RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME and I COULD NOT look away, so I just reached back and tried to help whoever it was crowdsurfing over me or w/e the best I could. Except they wouldn't budge! Then I realized Manson was trying to get them to sing along with him so I finally turned around and saw OMFG the ky00test little girl face-to-face with Manson on her daddy's shoulders, lol.

OMFG
I JUST HIT
THE JACKPOT

O_O

Seriously, I was just sifting through my footage like usual when I stumbled upon another performance of "Lunchbox" from the End Times tour and zeroed in on it. As we all know, Manson "mumblecores" LOTS of shit and the break in "Lunchbox" is PARTICULARLY extemporaneous, so I was listening REALLY close.

I already knew Manson was performing a "mash-up/medley" of sorts about school shootings when he started "Lunchbox," his own song about fending off schoolyard bullies with nothing more than sharpened pencils (metaphors!) and his then-recently outlawed, metal lunchboxes, along with his EVER SO SLIGHTLY tweaked rendition of "Once in a Lifetime" by the Talking Heads.

That much was clear IMMEDIATELY as he was screaming it into our faces in realtime.

From there, I was simply trying to transcribe EVERY SINGLE PERFORMANCE of "Lunchbox" I could find on my many SD cards from last year, decoding whatever the fuck Manson said throughout, lol.

Obviously, my mic records sound better than most human ears hear it, so it was an absolute JAW-DROPPER when I was listening in on headphones and finally figured out EXACTLY wtf Manson was singing in between both songs.

YEAH, MANSON COVERED NEIL YOUNG.

Specifically, Neil Young's protest song entitled "Ohio," regarding the infamous Ohio Kent State University shooting where overzealous, undertrained National Guardsmen shot four peaceful students dead on the campus lawn in 1968. Kind of the ORIGINAL school shooting!

SO FUCKING PERFECT.

Honestly, I'm just putting this here because it's such an anomaly. Pretty sure it's the only End Times show where he DIDN'T sing extra lyrics in the middle. But the band still played "Cake and Sodomy" and I've posted almost every other version I filmed on this tour in this thread already so it sort of belongs here anyway, right?

Short version of the story: Manson cut his middle finger so badly JUST before this that he cut a song from the set too while he got bandaged up to continue.

He also got stitches later too but during the performance he just pulled the bandage off and spent half the goddamned song bleeding all over his own face anyway, lol.

CLASSIC FUCKING MANSON.
