So Effing COLD

I just got back to England and am staying at my parents'. It is below freezing, and they do not have the heating on overnight. They never have done as far as I can remember. It's an expensive house to heat.

IT IS COLDER THAN A FRIDGE AND THEY DO NOT HAVE THE HEATING ON. Is that normal?!

I've tried wrapping up and it's just too cold to work. I don't know if I can actually take this.

I don't want to guilt-trip my mam into turning the heating on for a week when I don't know if they can afford it (they would never ever let me pay towards the bill). Is this a time to grin and bear it, or a time to inconvenience my parents???

Yes, I hate the winter months. You need heat, so don't feel too bad about it.

My brother lives in England, used to be in Geordie land like you, but now he's in Sheffield. I'm not allowed to bitch about the weather to him.
Its 16 degrees but I was fucking freezing in the morning when it was 6 degrees. I know, I know. I'm from the hills! Everyone thinks I'm a disgrace, but if you ever see a Kumaoni, they're always wearing sweaters, in any weather, in any place, we just always feel cold. That's why we need rum. :)

OK I am now sat in bed with my laptop wearing jimjams, socks, a bathrobe, a blanket and 2 quilts AND the heating is temporarily on, and I am just comfortable. This house sucks.

Some houses in England just aren't built to heep the cold outside. Maybe they don't insulate their houses or the windows let the cold in. At least that's the impression I received when I stayed in England for a while.

I love the cold...but only outside. I really hate it when it's so cold inside a house or a room that I cant concentrate on anything else. When I'm freezing so much that I can't even manage to sleep....that's the worst!

Miss Lisa, do you have a hot-water bottle? That would keep you warm at least a little bit!

As a native Minnesotan, I partially can't help but say- HA! Welcome to my world! But the other half of me can't help but sympathize, since I'm nice, and I hate Minnesota cold.

Although if it makes any consolation, I've been in my basement when it was subzero in Fahrenheit outside, and it's a bitch down here. I don't know if I have any insulation down here. =X

I don't know... I actually quite like cold... not too cold, but I prefer it to boiling temperatures- I think I'd rather be cold than hot and sticky...
another weird thing is that even though none of teh heaters at my house actually work, it's always quite warm :s

It is freezing here too, Lisa. I don't mind the cold, but I empathize with you in a way. I would suggest drinking alcohol until you pass out each night of the week. But I think you are more health conscious than I am. Hey, that is what the homeless do anyway, and they sleep OUTSIDE.

My honest advice would be to talk to your parents about it, and if all else fails, fuck em, turn the heat on yourself, and let them deal with the bill. You're their child. Your comfort is their responsibility.
