I have a variation idea for the main gtr riff that can be moved to bass (kind of makes it sound a bit like Reflecting God meets Tool) and maybe shifting the instruments around more like that will allows us to do some more unique things on top.

And depending on who's doing vocals, I'm even down for changing the key of the song. Make take it down a few steps in pitch? Like maybe around the tuning A Perfect Circle use (C# standard)?

    Just throwing ideas around.
that sounds great. I can sing, it's more of a deep Nick Cave/Bowie/Waits thing and I don't know if that's what you guys are after. Even though after having experience in several bands myself I still feel uncomfortable covering a song by Marilyn Manson... I don't know why. I guess it depends on if we're trying to imitate here, which would make me drop out of this project, but is there anyone else here who has perhaps a unique kind of voice like this? Maybe we could have multiple vocalists, cutting them up for harmonies etc.

So what do we need to do to get this rolling? Are people in the position to start working on this now?
I think first we'll need to either brainstorm if we want to do anything different with the songs, or we should trust someone to make up their own drum track and we can go from there.

I have Reason. I can do anything that doesn't involve recording audio. Synths, pads, drums, whatever. Use me like I was a whore.

I spoke to Creepyclutz last night and there is a good probability that there will be some sort of collaboration. So, I think that the best idea would be to collectively discuss either in this thread, or privately people that you want to or plan to collaborate with. It just needs organization as far as travel arrangements if need be, time frames, what all will be provided by each person and who we are going to partner up with etc ....

I can do drum programming, and have them sound pretty damn close to real. I'm also keen to help out with any of the mixing involved.

To get this ball rolling? I think we need to settle on something and make a starting point. The Coma White/ Black thing has been discussed a few times, and I think it'd be a good place to start. Stylistically though, if we're going to do a straight cover, I can start on drum programming now... if we're going to change it, and have our own interpretation, well, it's probably best for a guitarist or keys person to put their thoughts down in audio form, and then I'll come up with a drum part for that.

I'll record a bass lick idea I have. It's pretty much similar in tempo, just switches the main gtr lick to bass, which makes it sound different. We'll try going with that ;)

I'll just reiterate that this needs organization. Not just tossing ideas around. We need an itinerary. We need to figure out who we are teaming up with, what parts are assigned to who, and keep it as practical as possible.

I have entertained the idea of travelling to collaborate with anyone who is willing to do that. Other than that, I know of at least one person who is down for that, and that is Mr. CreepyKlutz.

Anyone else who is interested, just PM me or contact me on AIM or MSN.

Quick note - We have to also take into consideration each persons availability as far as resources, and a time frame. This can't be a rushed effort. This could take a while. But I think that if the communication stays tight, and it doesn't get abandoned because it is taking too long, then this can happen.

A tempo and a key would probably be good, too...

^ I'd rather assumed we'd be keeping it in the same key. As for tempo, I can get that from Cringeon once he's got his riff idea down.

I was just saying to Shangri-LIE on MSN that I think, for the most part, it's best to keep this cover fairly straight. We can make little changes and give it our own flavour, but doing any sweeping and drastic changes to it will take a lot of time and discussion... which could be used to produce an original (my original intent for the thread). The idea of a cover was to test out the idea and get a feel for the whole process, "warm up" if you will... so going to such lengths of effort to do a drastically changed cover seems counter-productive.

I was also saying to him, and will reiterate here, that my original plan was to do the cover as a warm up, then produce an original song. However, if all goes well and it's successful, then there's no reason people can't do more, although I may or may not be involved. But if my idea can serve as a springboard to people collaborating musically over the forum, then that'd be great. Just remember to thank me if you ever win a Grammy.

On the subject of Coma White, here's a shitty old scrap I found in my MIDI class folder. Enjoy the failure.
