It's o.k. to be stupid and somewhat understand something as long as you participate in the show. "We're raised to be stupid. Taught to be nothing at all."

That is how he is still dangerous in my opinion. It's not him that is "shocking" it's the way people react to what he does, or the way they try to become adept to his mannerisms, fashion, and semi-competent understanding of his message that is "shocking". Marilyn Manson became what he is in order to warn people against being like him. His message was never about trying to get people to understand him. His mission has always been to evoke certain reactions from his audience and see how far THEY take it.

MM is a special artist in the sense that, although he has borrowed ideas from here and there, there's still no one quite like him. I don't see one artist in today's scene that challenges people to think or shake things up even slightly. Popular music is too crowded by songs to brainlessly dance to. What we need are new artists that are interesting in their own unique way. In that sense, I think Lady Gaga comes close to being MM like. The quality of her work can certainly be put up to question (much like MM) and is a matter of opinion, but she at least takes some risks and keeps shit interesting. For example Born This Way is totally in a different vein than The Fame and The Fame Monster, if you know what I mean.

With MTV's lack of interest in rock celebrities/stars, music entertainment today is at its all time low since its birth. It doesn't generate as much interest (or hysteria) as it used to, and as it should imo. Perhaps some artist will come along and change that, but I can't see that happening anytime soon. The music business is in a state of transition, and what it will evolve into in the next 10-15 years is something that I can't guess for sure, but it doesn't look quite as interesting as it used to be.

I didn't read the WHOLE thread, but you also have to remember the circumstances in which Manson was put into the mainstream. Trent Reznor saw that he had a message, and brought him further than any large label was willing to do alone. I'd say if we were ever to have a next "Manson" it would be through another band's vanity label... Who knows... It could even be Manson's own Hell etc. label if he sees something he likes.

I think it was just that Reznor saw that the band Marilyn Manson could make him a lot of money. And well, he wasn't wrong.

    I couldn't agree more.

Keep in mind when Reznor worked with him, ACSS was produced.

So true. It's important to remember that when they were working on something, something was produced and it was what they were working on.

    It is.
There have been several occasions where Trent has kept Manson in his place. It's a shame they're not friends anymore.
