I like to read the novel after I've seen the film, as the latter always ends up being kind of disappointing and lacking in substance if you know the book well, whereas if you see the film first the novel kind of becomes a super deluxe extended directors cut!

I've been looking forward to this movie.

Nice point of view MrPogo. I always thought "I need to read the book first so I'll know if the movie sucks" and it usually sucked for me because of this x3
I probably should start doing this your way if I want to enjoy movies based on books

The only stumbling block to that order is you don't know what novels are going to be made into movies. Unless you're Marilyn Manson.

Well yeah, but in situations like this - where you haven't already read the book - you can do it this way, and if it's been a long time since you read the book you can hold off any urge to read it again!
As an example, I read The Hobbit about 15 years ago, so it's hazy enough in my memory that it won't "ruin" the movies as much as it will if I read it again now. In fact it was the Lord Of The Rings series that put me onto the idea; I saw the first two movies having never read the books, but then read all three novels shortly before seeing the third. That meant I got the "super deluxe extended directors cut" effect for the first two films, but during the third I was constantly thinking "They cut out X! Y was really rushed! Z was majorly simplified!" and enjoyed it nowhere near as much.
