Default Are Humans Losing their Innocence?

I sure hope I never will!

    - ( And this topic isn't about sex ) I just need to make that very clear :-) you can of course discuss sex in this topic if you feel it's relevant.

    Anyway.......

This topic is about other parts of our life!

I can still get happy by the little things in life...... like when somebody I really care about surprise me in a sweet way.

What about you? - Do you still have the curiosity like a child even though you are now an adult?

Or do you feel you are slowly losing it?

Life can be very brutal, so it's easy to lose our innocence.... but how can we keep it no matter what?!

I think the innocence of our mind is VERY important for our wellbeing......

I love the little things in life, more and more people get into the mind frame that they need big entertainment to make them happy. Lot's of bells and whistles, flashing lights, etc....and perhaps that does it for some, but for myself something as simple as sitting at a little cafe next to the lake with my girlfriend, a cup of coffee and a cigarette in hand and discussing world events is what makes me happy. I don't always have to find the next big thing in entertainment, or be constantly bombarded with outside stimuli to be content. I think obsessive TV/Music/Video games is bad for you, your brain needs time to take a break from it every once in awhile.

I bet if people who watch 8 hours of TV a day and play Halo/Resident Evil for 14 hours, and so on actually took a walk out in nature for an hour would be surprised how good they'd feel afterwards. It gives the mind time to clear from all the noise and clutter that builds up and I feel that is very important for mental health.

It's nice to get away from the noise of television, game consoles, cellphones and mp3 players. We don't need those things to be happy, we've been indoctrinated to believe that, and sometimes we convince ourselves it's true, but I think if most people were to put those things down and actually go for that walk, put down their kindles and bookeen's and actually picked up a real book, put down their iphones/blackberry and actually wrote a note to a friend instead of txt or went over to their house for a visit instead of calling, then they'd begin to see that the finer things in life are the connections we have with other people, not what connects us to them.

Of course, that's just my opinion....I could be wrong.

Marian, I am not sure what you mean by the question: “are humans losing their innocence?”
Do you mean are we, as the human race, losing our collective conscience? Or, alternatively, do you think the circumstances and demands of the modern and or adult world have corrupted our lives, resulting in the loss of our true selves?

Regarding ‘innocent’ or childlike outlooks on life, I continue to feel curiosity and a sense of wonder when it comes to experiencing the world and engaging in thought provoking conversation, literature, art and music. I do, however, feel overwhelmingly disillusioned and disappointed with humanity as a whole. I expect more from people, which, I suppose, is a very idealist and therefore innocent desire.

I'm still totally perplexed regarding the topic of this thread, but I'll take a shot at answering the few concrete concepts you touched on.

If you're speaking on the scale of 'humans' as a whole, we've never been innocent. The path of human sociological history is saturated with awful things, and there is no sign of that stopping.

If you're speaking on the scale of personal innocence, that's just another way of saying 'naiveté' which is horrible trait for a person to have. It indicates a lack of knowledge about the world or a situation.

So I can't imagine any situation in which innocence could be considered a good thing, unless we're using different definitions of the word.

Or maybe my Asperger's is kicking in and I'm interpreting your thread too literally.

It could be both! - Your own answer/instinct will tell you where you are right now in your life.

    I do the same.

The way you perceive this topic will tell you a lot about yourself.

I'm still waiting for a convincing argument that people were ever "innocent" to begin with.

Is this some nostalgia thing where people get all rosey about how sweet they were when they were children? Cause I guarantee you pulled all kinds of rotten shit as a kid that you would never get away with as an adult.

Is this about how you didn't have to know about all the awful things that in the world as a child? Well if so, you're actually better off now. You now have the info to protect yourself. As an adult you are in a position to at least try to do something about it.

Is this because you don't have an imagination anymore? Since when is losing your imagination required upon becoming an adult. There are plenty of adults with wild imaginations. Just look at how many ways they can think of to be offended by something. For that matter, there are plenty of dull children who have no imagination.

Or is this some ontological argument about how mankind has become more violent and depraved? Well, actually, the facts are to the contrary. You are less likely to be a victim of violence than you ever were in history. Half as likely, than just twenty years ago!

I'm not being argumentative, mind you. I just don't understand what this thread is about. I think "innocence" is one of those words that everyone uses often but has lost any meaning.
