    Default Rowland S. Howard

Einsturzende Neubauten have been getting a lot of love in here recently and I'd like to talk about another great artist who is hugely underrated. While guitarists like John 5 and Steve Vai show a huge amount of technical proficiency, artist Rowland S. Howard is an innovator on guitar makes an infamous use of bizarre chord changes and strange scales.

    Wikipedia:
Rowland S. Howard (24 October 1959 – 30 December 2009) was an Australian rock musician, guitarist and songwriter, best known for his work with the post-punk group The Birthday Party and his subsequent solo career.

Personal note: Before Rowland died my wife caught his last concert in which he coughed blood into a tissue and threw it into the crowd (we still have this tissue), she also had tickets to another show he was about to do but unfortunately he died and we still have this ticket as well. Nice bit of rock memorabilia. :)

No Rowland fans.... Seriously? Does anyone on Provider Module even listen to ANY bands that are not fucking signed to major labels?

Rowland was a superb GENIUS, his guitar playing for me.. redefined what could be considered as "heavy". His sound was HELL ON EARTH. He had a touch for reverb, dissonance, n' feedback, that I've not heard from anyone else, not even the whole Grunge generation.

Don't mind Kollaps, you n' me know that Rowland is Autoluminiscent.

To those folks out there, wanting to hear something that will burn your soul without being metal.. Check this out:

    And with the birthday party:

I actually got into Rowland S. Howard through Lydia Lunch by way of Richard Kern via Marilyn Manson, so I'm glad there's a thread for him here. One of my personal favorites:

Great to see other people interested in Rowland's work.

I was wondering if you guys knew anything about his guitar sound? I've done a bit of research and discovered he used a MXR Distortion + / Bluebox and a 12 band graphic EQ with everything pushed up to it's max.

I'm really curious about his rig and the chord progression he used.

Today is Rowland S. Howard's birthday, unfortunately he died 3 years ago but if he were to be alive today he would have been 53. Last night I had a little party for him and my wife made him a dairy free cake. We ate half of it, and then threw the rest of the cake up the alleyway across the road from my house (it's having it's name changed by the council to Rowland S. Howard Laneway in respect of Rowland and his work).

    Here are some photos:

If anyone is interested, this is the article about the laneway being changed, the guy who organised it (Nick Haines) is my neighbor (and an old 70's punk).

Rowland S. Howard is sorely missed by many people, especially around here in St. Kilda.

    Happy birthday to Rowland!

This song has so much power in it, Rowland gave all his soul to his art.

I just got this done yesterday!

The two tickets are for a gig he had booked at the Northcote Social Club here in Melbourne, unfortunately he was hospitalised and couldn't make it to the gig. He died shortly after and never played another show. I'm really glad my wife kept those tickets.
