Default Marilyn Manson, Metallica and Slash talk about the "Death of Rock".

There is a short article, though nothing Manson-specific, here. The video contains the part from Manson and the others in the title:

Thank you for posting, I thought someone already posted it but I guess I just stumble across it when I saw it.

The only thing I can say about those comments is that James Hetfield is fucking delusional.

Exactly how is he delusional? I can't stomach the man, nor Metallica but I thought what he said was pretty spot on aside from the part where he referred to himself as an 'underdog'. That is pretty ridiculous when you are selling DVD's of yourself playing a stadium show in 3D but yeah - I'd definitely agree with his sentiments on rock as a genre of music and it's relevance in the global music industry.

I think Hetfield made a great point.
This downloading trend has certainly hurt the industry, but at the same time it's bringing 'rock' back to basics.
Just like in the 60's and 70's, the only bands that got heard were the ones good enough and persistent enough to make themselves heard.

I loved Hetfield's comments. I think that in a way, it really sums up what Metallica has been about the last ten or so years, having all of these big budget resources yet keeping themselves in that underdog mentality. Manson's comments were alright, I guess. He didn't do anything too embarrassing this time! lol. The comment about "Rock is about playing from you (lawlsy Internet bleep!)" comment was unnecessary, but I guess I'm just going to have to get used to the fact that Manson is all about his privates now.

Rock is not dead. What Manson said is right. Rock is everchanging. Indie is still popular. Of course Metal isn't popular anymore, but it's not like there are no bands anymore. But I haven't really heard any fantastic new Metal bands. That's what we need.

Metal needs to fucking die already. I think the majority of it is just embarrassing, even more so now with the way it has been so cleaned up.

Metal is a broad term, just as rock is - but what is commercially viable in the metal/rock scene today is pretty generic shit with little to no substance. The only bands worth anything that get airplay are the ones who had careers before it all went to shit. There are plenty of bands in the metal world doing really great stuff, but it's not going to be anything the mainstream is going to pick up on. I like the idea of it going more underground, and getting further away from the cookie cutter shit of either bands like Killswitch Engage, or All that Remains - or bands who are ditching metal for dubstep/brocore.

I think rock, or the essence of what rock energy should be is found more in the underground metal scene than popular rock today. It's always been attitude and energy, and I think it's been a long time coming for a break to happen. Nu-metal is for me when the commercial side became the primary instead of the music. It's kind of peaked, and already is waning in favor of more electronic/dance stuff.

Rock is dead as a commercial kind of music. That is pretty much it, there are many bands both old n' new still kicking it, you just have to look for them, and taking in account the flip side of today's hyper-informed world. You can find the goods really easily.

And well Rock's mainstream relevance, in my opinion; won't resurrect anytime soon, not at least in this generation's current cycle (1990-2005). It is something you can see everywhere, most people want an easy fix, something easy to digest and shit and later forget. So they can get over with it already, for the next batch of easy to digest and shit and later forget musical material. It may sound pessimistic, but people nowdays are so desensitized, simple minded ( ironically in an era where you've easy access to any kind of knowledge), and with the attention span of an ape; they just want to be struck by a techno beat through a 3:15 song.

Seeing the bright side, there are no limits anymore in what you can do artistically. Millions of lobotomized fucks will hear it? not probably, can it be great art? for sure. And there always will be folks out there that will get it, and as for rock music ( whatever in all its shapes n' forms), it will always have an audience, however small but an audience. And that has as a value, that millions praising Madonna, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, or etc will never kill.
