While these lyrics do indeed originate from an announcement about Holy Wood..., I think it might be instructive to remember that it was published barely a year after the release of Mechanical Animals, an era tragically cut short by the advent of the Columbine shooting, and that using spoken word content regarding the crashing of planes over the music of "Murderers Are Getting Prettier Every Day" in an ad campaign for a fashion label which debuts THE VERY WEEK of the anniversary of 9/11 and of the release of Mechanical Animals was possibly just TOO brilliant an opportunity to pass up.

I'm not saying that's definitely his intention here, mind you...but then again we're talking about someone who's specifically pointed out on numerous occasions that there's no such thing as coincidences.

    ;)

Of course not. If that were the case, I would at least be able to smear some butter on the fucker and get a decent amount of pleasure out of it.

    What about this?

Brave Now World. Don’t ever believe what you read, especially if you are illiterate. Art will be the burning churches, burning beds, burning witches, burning bridges, burning Cadillacs, burning forests, burning flags, and the burning human remains that are the evidence of the burned books, filled with stories of our razor and rope burns.

But we will not be the ashes. We will not be cremated, we will cauterize our wounds. We never wanted our wings anyway.

We are more than the flightless creatures, that are always expected to rise from the bonfire. These are barbecues for trembling, idiot arsons who pretend to be America’s Vatican in whatever ‘ism’ is easiest to swallow. After the horrid blowing jobs, they expect us to fight against each other to obtain the security of willing slaves.

We do not walk among them. I am among no one.

Both of these are journal entries, and I think they both measure up to one another in different ways.

I find that journal entry to be very powerful and moving (in the sense of the term "movement" as a noun), but compared to the lyrics on the past two or three albums just don't leave much room for competition. I love the albums, but these journal entries are vastly superior to anything on The High End of Low and Born Villain.

That's true for the most part, except for maybe the odd stanza.

Also, "Void of Course" is the title of a book of poetry by Jim Carroll that was published in the fall of 1998.

The film adaptation of Jim Carroll's "The Basketball Diaries" was another scapegoat in the aftermath of the Columbine massacre.
