Default Can you still be a Christian?

I was just wondering what you guy's thoughts would be on this and here is my question.

I myself have faith in God, however I do love MM's music. Some of his songs I just like the music and some of them I like the lyrics.

I don't see why not. In a way his music is more of an accusation directed at the church for not living up to its own doctrine and a challenge to the religious right of America than any real sort of attack against Jesus or Christian beliefs.

He likes turning the bible into snow. I'm not wagging my finger at that I'm just saying.

(LOL at the Eminem and MM video. You can tell he is out of his element.)

I know many will disagree, but I've always felt a strong NO, it cannot and does not go hand in hand. Any attempt to justify listening to Manson as a christian is very plainly deceiving yourself.

There are a lot of phony Christians that are naive and ignorant and really do not understand their religion and they will make up all kinds of excuses to justify all sorts of sins.

As a Manson fan, of course I'd like more people to listen to him. I want his art to be successful! But to take this topic seriously, I cannot sit here and say that it's perfectly fine to be a christian and listen to this blasphemous secular music with post-modernism blatantly showcased throughout.

Sorry kids, it's just polar opposites. Just like you couldn't be a Muslim and listen to Manson either. Christians are not the lone group that cannot affiliate with Marilyn Manson. MANY religious groups, if they have a true understanding of their religion and are serious practicing members of the ideology, should not and could not listen to the music of Marilyn Manson. Or MANY other mainstream bands.

The messages (in general mainstream secular music) are of sex, drugs, thinking for yourself, and basically mainstreaming Satanic views (LaVey) of "do what you want" "Follow your heart" "Whatever you FEEL is right" This is in direct defiance of Yahweh of the New and Old Testament.

You'll always hear some bullshit christian conspiracy theorists that mainstream music has satanic agenda's....well, it's really not that bullshit. LaVey himself spoke of many would-be Satanists and in-the-closet Satanists posing as Christians. ( this is because the humanism principles of 'if it feels good do it' and 'do what makes you happy' is a universal thing. This is why Satanism is secretly the biggest religion of all. People are just unaware that they basically believe in the doctrine LaVey mainstreamed in the 60's....even though it was always an underground way) Adversely, Christianity (appropriately) is the direct opposite of this worldwide satanic universal view. If it feels good, don't do it! Abstinence. Refrain from sin and carnal desires, and repent. (IMO this is how Christianity and other apocalyptic religious fantasies got popular; capitalizing off the fears of the people. Make everything that comes NATURAL a sin, and you'll HAVE to repent and give money with enough brainwash. They screwed you before you were even born--Original Sin.

These concepts of course were around forever; long long before LaVey. He was merely the guy that figured out how to make a buck on it and compile it in some books and make a damn good religion out of it!!

But if Marilyn Manson has or does do anything or speak anything pro about drugs, same sex relationships, self worship, adultery, sex before marriage, stealing, androgyny, pornography, etc, etc, insert any "sin" here, then he is one of Satan's propaganda ministers on earth sent to stray you from the truth of the one and only true God, Jesus Christ.

You cannot listen to the Antichrist and claim to be a christian without sounding foolish.

    Absolutely 100% incompatible.

People with not a strong enough grasp or knowledge of their faith can easily trick themselves into thinking all sorts of things are OK that The Bible speaks against. Education and study will help you to remain strong in your faith and not be misguided.

And this is NOT meant to sound insulting to anyone. I just feel that it's important to have a full understanding of your beliefs. There are SO many times I see people clearly disobeying their supposed system of beliefs without any knowledge of their doing so. I think Marilyn Manson would agree to question everything and have a deep understanding rather than blindly believing and following the mindless masses. Research.

These people that believe you can actually enjoy Marilyn Manson and still be a christian...I just don't understand how they are kidding themselves. Everything about the man is in direct opposition to the doctrine of Christianity.

This is NOT meant to scare you away from Marilyn Manson. If anything, I hope it inspires you to look deeper in your own faith and realize the holes within it. I've gotten more substance of beauty, art, knowledge, intellect, philosophy, etc from Marilyn Manson than I've ever gotten from The Bible.

^ In short, you have to be 100% non-religious to listen to black metal/anti-christian music? I'm Catholic.. What do you say to that? This works.

I think you can. I listen to (and really love) a lot of things despite not always agreeing with certain things the artist believes in and/or talks about. If something sounds good and interests you, or evokes whatever it is in you or your life that causes you to like it, so be it.

Then again, I'm not christian, so who knows.

I prefer listening to myself and figuring out what works for me, whether others agree or not.

....I'd say you are not a very good Catholic to be listening to the devils music! lol

The above link that you posted are of some "steps" for how a christian can handle dealing with music that is clearly against the most important thing ever, your salvation. And I disagree.

There are some positive things mentioned in this article. Like where it says in the "Tips" section to be civil to all Black Metal fans. Well, obviously, we should ALL be civil to one another. Regardless of what music/race/religion/etc... So, that is a good point...

But right at first step, #1, it says "Respect Everyone's Opinion". Is everyone's opinion worth respecting? Even if they are full of shit? You, as the christian, have the only truth. You have one true Holy Word. As a Christian, it is your duty to go out and minister and change peoples opinions. Atheists, myself included, can sometimes get fed up with the constant near harassment of preaching, but really, can you blame them? They must care an awful lot about you to be trying so hard. They are trying to save your eternal soul from damnation and agony in the pits of hell. They really believe this stuff, so it makes sense that they might behave a bit frantic.

Same thing with #2. They say DO NOT go on Youtube...and preach to paraphrase. Why not? It's YOUR JOB to change the minds of these sinners! You are HELPING THEM if only you could get through to them.

#3 is retarded. "Concentrate on historical themes instead of anti-religious themes". Lol. So in other words, just take a blind eye to what is really going on in the song. Disregard it. Over look it. Seems like whoever is following these rules are really going out of there way now. They are ignoring huge amounts of the song and trying not to pay attention to it? um, how about don't listen to it because you are playing with fire?

#4 I can totally understand and you can probably just delete this whole list except for that one....but I'd expand upon it. Even though it may sound like an oxymoron, there are plenty of "christian black metal" bands out there. Basically music in that style but with lyrics glorifying God, not against him. ...So, yeah, basically just stick to bands that aren't evil.

#5 says never preach. I already gave my answer to that. The whole point of Christianity is preaching and saving souls.

#6 says to respect the artist even if you don't agree with them. I don't think the person who wrote this is a true christian. First of all, does EVERYONE deserve respect? Respect should be earned. And Never respect your adversary: Satan. Satan is the father of lies and deception. Need I remind you we are talking about the future of your very soul? Whether you have an eternity prison sentence in fire and brimstone or not? No you shouldnt respect them. You should get the hell away from those artists as soon as possible. How could you serve your Lord and Savior when you are listening to lyrics that are straight up blasphemous and completely against him. It's certainly a sin.

    7. Look at the beauty of Black Metal. There is plenty of beauty in it, sure. But that is irrelevant to the topic. And beauty is subjective.

    8. is "listen to the message of the music"? Are you kidding me? So ignore it when it suits you well, but listen at other times? Or just listen to everything now? Sounds like a contradiction. And you should pay absolutely NO attention to it or it's message if it is against your God.

    9. Is about "a number of christian black metal songs out there..." I agree and already touched on that. If you love the style of Black Metal so much, you need to stick to christian black metal bands. Otherwise, go to hell.

One of the tips is pretty anti-christian. But it's subtle. "Try to understand why most of the Black Metal community dislikes religion. It will aid in you accepting it" LOL. So in other words, go out and find all the problems with religion, and then you wont like religion anymore and you will accept black metal. As a christian, your goal should not be trying to find ways to accept something evil.

I already knew some people wouldn't agree with my views. I've had a very hard christian upbringing myself. I know how christians think and I can tell the difference between a real true christian and someone who is kind of unsure....maybe they don't know a lot about it but their family takes them to church once in a while. Maybe they really think they believe. They need a wake up call.

    please read:
    Mathew 7 13-23
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

God says this about false prophets:
15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

and on true and false christians/disciples

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

I think if. You are a good person, try to do your best for others then what you listen to music wise doesn't matter. I know plenty of so called Christians who care not a jot for their fellow man yet think because they say they are Christians and berate people who listen to certain music, their pass to heaven is secured.

Actually, it's funny because I probably sound like a christian right now. Lol. I'm just playing devil's advocate. I'm not a christian and I don't even believe in any after life. I don't even necessarily believe in the concept of "good" and "evil". I'm just speaking on behalf of my knowledge of the faith....

BUT, obviously what it really comes down to is doctrinal differences. How strict you are on yourself as a believer. I don't have the answers to the universe. None of us do. Some people think they can get answers from religion....more power to them if they don't force it on others or hurt and abuse people with it.

So really, it's based on how strict you want to be and on precisely what form of Christianity you refer to. Example, the person earlier admitted to being a Catholic. There has been a long long battle between Catholics and Protestants because Protestants accuse Catholics of being evil. They pray to Mary, Saints, the rituals, etc... it says to only pray to God in the Bible. They believe in a Purgatory. No mention of it in the bible. So, really, I can't answer your question. I think Emma is right. Basically only you can answer the question for yourself. You just better hope you are right. I quoted Mathew in my last post, and that could easily describe you if you are wrong.
