@YoureAlreadyHere - Okay, you make a great case for that lyric. I've also always associated the title with forbidden fruit as well, because the song's about things you can never have. And he said it was even in a distant way, sort of inspired by Fiona Apple. There's 'Apple' again.

From his book, about going to Howard Stern's movie premiere with Fiona, he had said, "When she walked in the room they were blasting the song we did for Lost Highway, 'Apple of Sodom,' and the lyric playing was 'I got something you can never eat.' Total delusional self, because that song's about obsession and things you can never have and, in a distant way, is kind of inspired by her."

I'm rambling now, but just figured I'd throw in a few references for fun. But again, I like your reasoning for the misheard lyric and how or why that may be the actual line. I still like my understanding of it, but yours is very thematic of the song itself as well.

BTW the actual lyric is "I've got a black eye of a soul" although I think he sings "I've got a black eye of soul", so you got your own misheard lyric there too.
To add to this, I remember someone mishearing the next line as well.

'I've got a black asshole, moles in a hole.'

    Still sticks with me.

"Because the song's about things you can never have"- definitely!

On Fiona, I don't ever remember reading anything about that :( was it on Long Hard? I love that woman: I've seen her live, piano & all. Almost named my daughter Fiona, but my family wouldn't STFU about Shrek.
Anywho, what does he mean in a distant way inspired by her? Lyrically & such, or (grasping for straws here, pardon me) was there some romance I'm not aware of?

Yes, it was in 'The Long Hard Road Out of Hell'. There wasn't a romance between them, but he was attracted to her. He brought her as a date to the premiere of Howard Stern's movie Private Parts in 1997. On the subject of sleeping with her, he said, "If I was ever to be put in a circumstance where I could have sex with her, I would decline because her vagina is probably too precious to be dirtied by my filthy cock."

Then he followed up with the previous quote I posted. And since the song is about things you can never have, that's why he said it's inspired by her in a 'distant' way, as in not directly inspired by her specifically. He didn't have her in mind, I don't think, when he wrote it. But knowing he could never have her, plus the irony of the song playing while she was in the room, it definitely relates to the situation (the song and its meaning). That's what he meant by that.

I've been saying this aloud and I still can't figure out what song this is from.

It still seems to happen to me, even though I know the actual lyrics now. Some of those misheard lyrics certainly seem to stick around a lot more than others. =P
