When the above single came out it was quite possibly my favourite thing they'd ever done. I dug the music and overall tone, the dark and layered production, and I was seriously hyped for the album. Then I got the album, and... the rest of it isn't like this at all. It's like someone had a stroke and woke up thinking putting 3 covers on the album was a good idea, one of which is so bad and out of place with the rest of the album you wonder how it got through the entire record label process without someone vetoing it. The other two mightn't have been bad as bonus tracks, but sandwiching the rest as they are they just break the flow in an awkward manner. After repeated listens the other originals have slowly grown on me to good enough, but nowhere close to living up to what they showed us on the lead single. The worst part about it is I can so clearly hear everything they could have done to bring it all up a notch (just a darker bass tone here, a counter melody there). I sometimes question if it's just because I'm so used to hearing bands with dense productions but no, I listen to minimal stuff too and it's cool. This just sounds empty and... unfinished, unfortunately. I can dig bits of it I guess but it's fallen far short of what I thought would be their best album to date.
i completely agree. “As above, so below” is what may come the closest to their lead single. The three covers really break the flow of the album, but I love the way Into Dust ends the album. ITM have become one of my favorite bands, and I was highly looking forward to this, but maybe it could have been better executed if they took more time off from touring.

I think Slipknot have transcended themselves over the past few years. Line-up changes, death and dependency issues could have stopped this band in their tracks after three albums, but they keep pushing forward and are arguably the best 'Stadium' Metal band on the stateside (flanked next to Rammstein).

This track from their most recent album is astounding.
