It is "Starve" In the Chorus for Devour. It also makes more sense. Comsidering the title is Devour, meaning eating. If she makes him Starve, he can't love her. "I can't sleep until I Devour you."
And all this debate over lyrics, just look at the lyrics books. Even if they're wrong.

I was watching a bunch of THEOL Tour videos of HEOL songs, that was one of the videos. That is actually a bunch of different performances mixed together.

Yeah, I did notice that. I wonder who recorded the audio, though? It's in such high quality.

She recorded footage from 2007-2013 In HD. Only user I've found that posted HD footage from ROTW Tour and THEOL Tour.

I believe the following are the correct lyrics to Devour. I tried correcting them on lyric websites but they won't take them for some reason.

"I'll swallow up all of you
Like a big bottle of big, big pills
You're the one that I should never take
But I can't sleep until I devour you
    I can't sleep until I devour you

    You're a flower that's withering
I can't feel your thorns in my head
This is no embrace, you're buried deep
And you're not crying, this is blood all over me
You're not crying, this is blood all over me
You're not crying, this is blood all over me

And I'll love you, if you let me
And I'll love you, if you won't make me starve

I used to hold your heart to neck
I know I'll miss you if I close my eyes
But this is loaded, if I open them
I'll see you and I'll blow your heart to pieces
I will blow your heart to pieces
I will blow your heart to pieces
I will blow your heart to pieces

And I'll love you, if you let me
And I'll love you, if you won't make me starve
    Oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh

My pain's not ashamed to repeat itself
Pain's not ashamed to repeat itself
Pain's not ashamed to repeat itself
Pain's not ashamed to repeat itself
    I can't sleep until I devour you
    I can't sleep until I devour you
    I can't sleep until I devour you
    I can't sleep until I devour you

And I'll love you, if you let me
And I'll love you, if you won't make me starve"

As I already said, I get why "starve" works even though the booklet says "stop" instead. His enunciation and multi-tracked vocals somewhat allow for both so it's ultimately kind of a non-issue anyway.

As for the lyrics above, I'm fairly certain it's "thorns in my hand" not "thorns in my head" although, again, both work fine. However, as you can see in the live footage, his body language during the lyric strongly suggests that it is indeed "hand," fwiw.

And although the booklet says "I used to hold your haunted neck," I'm also reasonably confident that it's actually "I used to hold your heart and neck" instead. And "heart to neck" doesn't really make sense contextually or in and of itself anyway so that's easily discounted.

But anyway, it's a great song, regardless.

Glad to see so much appreciation for it here!

    :)

I thought it was difficult for me to understand songs in english because I'm not a native speaker, but after I saw that you don't really understand them either, I felt better about myself. Why is it easy to understand what someone says irl but not in a song?

I mean, I understand them in any case, really.

It's just difficult to know for sure what certain lyrics might actually be when the vocals and lyric sheets contradict one another, especially when multi-tracked vocals which sometimes seem at odds with one another are involved as well. Manson ad libbing and/or consistently altering lyrics live further muddles the issue.

"1996" is an interesting case. The lyric sheet says "now it's your turn to see misanthropy," but we all knew it was wrong, we just had a HELL of a time figuring out what he was actually saying since the song is so loud and chaotic. It wasn't really till the spoken word version started being played in 1997 that we finally knew for sure he was saying "now it's your turn to see what I hate about me" instead.

Hell, people had all KINDS of ideas about what he might be singing elsewhere when the lyrics weren't even in the booklet at all, too. One that leaps to mind was "fuck this, nothing's changed" which a lot of people thought he was singing when "nineteen-ninety-six" is RIGHT THERE in the title, lol. I still see that one on lyric sites occasionally.

But the cool thing is when BOTH versions of alternate lyrics work. Like the above example of "misanthropy" vs. "what I hate about me." One could easily conclude that his own misanthropy is meant to be suggestive of what exactly it is he hates about himself yet you're still about to see anyway. That's pretty interesting and works within the context of the album's larger themes of hatred and self-loathing perfectly.

Another interesting example would be the disparity between the lyrics for "Disposable Teens," which are "I've got a face that's made for violence upon," which could have maybe just been an alternate choice he explored while the song was still a work in progress before he settled on "I've got a face that's made for violence or porn." Or it could have simply been mistakenly transcribed by whoever had the job because they weren't familiar enough with the idiosyncrasies of his vaguely southern drawl to discern the actual lyric. It could go either way, who knows.

But Manson himself quoted the lyric in an old interview as being "violence or porn" so that's settled, at least.

I could go on but you probably get the idea, lol.

I thought it was "violence upon" even though that doesn't make as much sense now that I think about it. I wonder how many more lyrics we get wrong. It would be easier if they made sure the lyrics in bootlegs were the right ones. As for Devour, I think it's my favorite Manson song from the last decade.

And skill, the differentiation in perspective between the versus and variants on the bridge is what carries the song completely. It moves from warm and intimate, to the high almost wistful 'And I'll love you...' that begins to fragment as the other versus just get more and more desperate, raspy and breaking down. Yeh. It's gorgeous.

The High End of Low has a lot of really intense vocal moments, some of them quite raw. Even just the fact that in every song he is running one layer that is pitched HIGH and one that is pitched LOW - both of them escalating by the end to either out of control, wrenching screaming, or a controlled mixture like in We're From Americans. Initially it drove me up the wall because why? But I just decided it has to be deliberate because there is almost nowhere other album where he does it so obviously and so continuously, and it fits perfectly with the theme of the album. The most clear example is Wight Spider in the alternative version where you can hear the layers clearly and get that duet feeling, but also Four Horses, Leave a Scar, etc.

Apart from adoring how he changes up the Bowie lyrics, yes. Even though they are damned hard to hear over everything else and the are flattened, the screams are the the main reason I like Vodevil. They are angry in a way that is straightfoward - not angry and tinged with sadness, or with irony, or pain. I usually listen to it when stomping around in a bad mood, but I can see how it would go for workouts.

Yes, and yes. Even more particularly, 'I'm well aware I'm a danger to my self' - there is something about the way he carries it forward to the front of his mouth that makes it rueful and yet still invokes so many tones.

That's the part i'm referring to. I could listen to that part for the rest of my life. Probably not, but it really connects with me. I keep saying this, but the Alt. Version sounds SO much better, especially during that part.
